Former PSV coach backs Van Persie: “That could also have been done in another way”
1 min readWhile the Netherlands national team prepares for the World Cup in North America, it was announced last weekend that Robin van Persie has been put out on the street by the management of Feyenoord. After a difficult season in which the Rotterdam club finished second one street-length behind PSV, the former top striker's time is up.
This leaves Dick Advocaat in disbelief. The former PSV coach is currently preparing for the World Cup as head coach of Curaçao and was appointed earlier this season as an adviser to Van Persie.
''Robin van Persie is a young, talented coach. Of course he has made mistakes, but experienced coaches do too. Van Persie is driven, has knowledge and - also not unimportant - has a lot of charisma'', Advocaat says in an interview with Voetbal International.
Despite a disappointing season with an early exit in the KNVB Cup and the Europa League, Van Persie nevertheless managed, with Feyenoord, to qualify directly for the Champions League. ''He had to deal with twelve injured players in half a year, many of whom were regular starters. If you end up finishing second anyway and still get sacked, then you’re on a completely wrong wavelength'', continues the former PSV coach.
For Advocaat, achieving second place despite all setbacks is the only thing that matters. ''Then they’re going to say now that he scored too few points in the Europa League and less than the number two usually gets in the Eredivisie. Oh, come on, Feyenoord finished second. In the final stretch of the competition, he didn’t lose a match anymore. The Champions League—that should count. He really achieved that himself'', said the current head coach of Curaçao.
The former PSV coach also has nothing good to say about Dévy Rigaux, the new technical director of the Rotterdam club. ''Even then you could already tell that something was going to happen. A man of 38 who worked for a few years as technical director at Club Brugge comes into the big Feyenoord, knows no one yet, and suddenly comes out with texts like this. That could also have been handled in another way. If he didn’t want to continue with Van Persie, that could have been announced right away as well. You don’t treat a coach who has earned the club many millions, with Champions League qualification, in this way. Still, money where he can bring in some nice players,'' Advocaat concludes.

"Dat had ook op een andere manier gekund" vind ik wel een hele nette quote, want gewoon op straat zetten na een half jaar met 12 geblesseerden... bruh. Advocaat heeft gelijk dat die Champions League-kwalificatie toch telt, en Feyenoord had gewoon een koers.
Ik denk dat Advocaat een beetje selectief kijkt: Europa League en de beker waren matig, en zoiets weegt voor een club natuurlijk. Maar ok, ontslag op die manier blijft wreed als hij CL heeft geregeld, daar moet je dan ook respect voor hebben. 👀
Rigaux 38 jaar en meteen met "teksten" komt, dat is toch vragen om gedoe. Als je Van Persie echt niet wilde, zeg het dan gewoon meteen. Wat een circus eigenlijk. 💀
"Dat had ook op een andere manier gekund" is precies wat ik dacht. Rigaux lijkt me gewoon te scherp en te zakelijk, terwijl Van Persie op het veld en met uitstraling juist vertrouwen gaf. Tbh Feyenoord rolt niet voor niks terug op emoties.
Ik lees vooral een verhaal van pech en blessures. Advocaat zegt 12 geblesseerden in een half jaar, dan is "te weinig punten" wel een erg makkelijke conclusie. Maar Feyenoord kan natuurlijk ook al langer onrust voelen.
Tbh Rigaux slaat gewoon een rare toon aan, en ik vind het vooral vreemd dat die man binnen komt en meteen gaat sturen. Als hij iets wilde bespreken had het netjes gemoeten. Feyenoord haalt hem op, en dan dit.... 🤡
Advocaat kan het natuurlijk moeilijk hebben, maar tbh hij zegt ook iets belangrijks: if Feyenoord second is en CL haalt, dan is dat ontslag gewoon raar. Rigaux wordt er ook echt op afgerekend, daar snap ik de frustratie wel.
Advocaat is wel echt streng hoor. Maar i snap zijn punt, als je CL haalt met zoveel blessures en toch wordt weggezet dan is het echt slecht gecommuniceerd.
