Transfer journalist confirms rumor | Is Kovar leaving PSV again? 'Italian top club shows interest'

1 min read

He simply hasn’t gone through a whole best season. There are many PSV fans who find Matej Kovar a perfectly good goalkeeper, a very good goalkeeper, or even just an excellent one, the way people also found Walter Benitez an excellent goalkeeper, but the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Kovar, he can get by with it.

Matej Kovar sometimes stops a ball and sometimes multiple balls, which you only realize later were “great saves,” but just as often the Czech goalkeeper is completely off the mark. In any case, PSV will not miss Matej Kovar if his Eindhoven years were to come to an end, just as PSV does not miss Walter Benitez when it comes to his goalkeeping. All of it leaves a lot to be desired under the bar at PSV if we look at the last four seasons.

In other words, Niek Schiks is in no way inferior to Kovar, or to Benitez. Meanwhile, in the south of Italy people think they know that Kovar could well be a suitable goalkeeper for Napoli. The South Italian club is in fact interested in Matej Kovar. That reports Corriere dello Sport and it is confirmed by transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Kovar was loaned this season by PSV from Bayer Leverkusen, but in January PSV still transferred 5 million euros for the goalkeeper who almost makes a blunder every week but also manages to keep balls out. In 31 Eredivisie matches, Kovar conceded 41 goals and kept seven clean sheets. In short, poor numbers.

"If one of those two leaves, Napoli can sign Kovar", reveals Italian transfer journalist Di Marzio in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

7 clean sheets in 31 is not even that bad, but 41 conceded tells the story. tbh id rather have a keeper that is consistently solid than a highlight reel. If Di Marzio says Napoli can pounce, PSV should already have a plan for Schiks.

tbh i think Schiks is not a downgrade at all. If Kovar leaves, i just hope PSV replaces him with someone more consistent, not another 'sometimes world-class' keeper 😂

If Napoli comes with money, i get why PSV would listen. But lets not pretend Kovar is finished, he has moments of class... and way too many shaky ones too. Niek Schiks being better or not, that feels like the real question.

If Napoli really want Kovar, imo we are better off cashing in. 41 conceded in 31 and only 7 clean sheets is not good enough for PSV at keeper level.
