PSV’s player is candid about the future: “The chance is high that the club wants to sell me.”
1 min readWith the arrival of Matej Kovar and Nick Olij last summer, PSV decided to loan reserve goalkeeper Joël Drommel to Sparta Rotterdam. Despite a shaky start with the club from Rotterdam-West, Drommel grew into an important pillar of support for the Spangenars, and the chance also seems high that this goalkeeper will leave PSV this summer.
In an interview with Algemeen Dagblad, the PSV loanee looks back on the season in which he started all 34 league matches for Sparta and kept a clean sheet eleven times. ''You could say that I earned a lot of points for the club this season,'' Drommel tells the newspaper.
In the lead-up, the goalkeeper had a few unfortunate moments, and also in the first competitive match away at his current employer PSV (6-1), Drommel did not make a great impression. ''Maybe it was meant to be like that. Get down into the pit for a moment, and then slowly climb back up with the ladder,'' the goalkeeper says about it.
In addition, Drommel also does not let himself be thrown off track by things that are written about him. ''You should never let yourself be driven crazy by what people write about you. I have already experienced some things in football; you should never give up. Always listen to the people who are close to you. If the outside world wants to say something about you, then you have to shield yourself from that. Your true qualities will eventually come to the surface on their own'', the goalkeeper said.

The PSV loanee also believes that this season has been his best season so far. ''Although we've conceded quite a few goals, I've still been able to stand out every time. It could of course have been much worse, and it was the same last time against FC Twente. I'm happy with the statistics you just showed. When I look at it like this, I'm quite proud of it. And I've achieved my goal,'' says Drommel.
This summer there is a good chance that the goalkeeper will leave PSV and Drommel also hopes that a nice club will come along for him, since he thinks it is unlikely that he will be under the bar at PSV next season. ''It is still quite calm for now. I think the chance of becoming first-choice goalkeeper at PSV next season is not very big. Of course they have two excellent goalkeepers and the chance is that the club will want to sell me. But if nothing comes my way by then, I will just report in Eindhoven this summer. If you’re allowed to dream, then of course Spain, Italy, England or Germany. I hope a nice club comes along where I can continue at this level,'' the goalkeeper said.

I love the mindset: "don't get crazy about what people write" is peak goalkeeper mentality. But if they sell, i hope they still have a plan for depth, because injuries happen fast at 2nd keeper level.
But bro, i hope PSV doesnt sell just because he wants to dream of Spain and Italy. Money talk, ngl.
I think the interesting part is: "de kans is groot dat de club me wil verkopen". Thats basically confirming there is no clear future plan for him. With Kovar and Olij, Drommel is likely gone unless one of them flops 👀.
i get the whole "ladder up" story after PSV 6-1, but he improved massively at Sparta. Still feel PSV should keep him as 3rd choice at least, unless they get a real fee 💯.
Tbh i think PSV should not just sell because it might be quiet. Even with Kovar and Olij, competition in goal is healthy. Loan-to-sell vs keep as backup is a big decision.
That quote about climbing out of the "kuil" is actually relatable lol. Also the 6-1 at PSV was rough, but he clearly learned.
Drommel kept 34 games and 11 clean sheets for Sparta, that is proper stuff. If PSV wants to sell, i get it, but losing a keeper who actually plays is risky.
6-1 debut all over again... maar props aan Drommel, hij hield Sparta wel degelijk rechtop. Als PSV hem kan verkopen met winst is dat tbh een logische move.
That quote about
Tbh Drommel sounds very level-headed. 34 games and 11 clean sheets is not loan-player numbers, thats starter-banger stuff 🔥.
