Future of Malik Tillman: “If he could return to PSV, he would do it”

1 min read

He would be frustrated and not at all to his liking. He would even want to leave Bayer Leverkusen. It was also all pretty much to be expected, the transfer from PSV to Bayer Leverkusen.

Living and working in Leverkusen appeals to only a few people and, in the end, not Malik Tillman either. Players of Bayer Leverkusen generally live in Cologne or in Düsseldorf, and Dutch players sometimes continue to live in the Netherlands even after joining the German club.

For Malik Tillman, in any case, it applies that he is considering leaving Bayer Leverkusen again only one year after his move from PSV. The 23-year-old playmaker is frustrated by his role at the Bundesliga top club. BILD reported this recently. The American international was even the most expensive signing in Bayer Leverkusen’s history, at 35 million euros. Tillman was thus the successor to star player Florian Wirtz, who moved to Liverpool.

After Erik ten Hag was quickly forced to make way for Kasper Hjulmand, Tillman’s role changed. The attacking midfielder often wasn’t sure of a starting spot last season.

Leverkusen appears to want to keep Tillman under contract running until mid-2030, but the American seems to be pushing for a move away from Bayer Leverkusen. Premier League clubs Fulham and Brentford, who already showed interest last summer, would like to take him over from Bayer Leverkusen.

AD journalist and PSV plus Oranje watcher Maarten Wijffels knows exactly what to think about Tillman’s future. Wijffels believes that Tillman would like to return to PSV, although that doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

Tillman being the successor to Florian Wirtz for 35 million euros always sounded unrealistic. If Bayer changed the manager from Ten Hag to Hjulmand and his role dropped, then his frustration is understandable. But PSV should be careful with another "development" signing unless they can guarantee a starting position.

"Hij zou zelfs weg willen bij Bayer Leverkusen" bruh, that is exactly what happens when the system doesnt fit. Fulham or Brentford makes sense, but tbh if PSV called and offered real minutes, id bet Tillman would choose us. 👀

If Tillman is actually frustrated with minutes and the Bundesliga role, i get it. 35m price tag and then no steady base spot is brutal. Still, i just hope PSV would use him properly and not as a "luxury sub" again.
