These Swedish players with PSV backgrounds went into action at the World Cup

1 min read

Sweden is this World Cup's second opponent for the Netherlands in the group stage. PSV also has a number of players from Sweden who have played for the club.

PSVInside lists a number of Swedes who represented their country at the World Cup.

Andreas Isaksson

In the summer of 2008, goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson was taken over by PSV from Manchester City as a successor to the departed Heurelho da Silva Gomes. Isaksson also defended Sweden’s goal during the 2006 World Cup, where the Scandinavian country was eliminated in the round of 16 after a 2-0 defeat against the host nation Germany.

In 2002, Isaksson was the reserve goalkeeper during the World Cup in Japan & South Korea, where Sweden managed to reach the next round at the expense of Argentina. There, it was then lost 1-2 after a golden goal in extra time against debutant Senegal.

Ola Toivonen

In the winter of 2009, Ola Toivonen from Malmö FF came to PSV, and in 2014 the Swedish midfielder, also a forward, left for Stade Rennais. In 2018, Sweden managed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2006 after the country had failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2010 and 2014.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Toivonen scored in the second group match to make it 0-1 against reigning world champions Germany, but despite this, they still lost 2-1. In the end, Sweden became group winners by winning their last group match 3-0 against Mexico, and with Toivonen as a starter, Sweden ultimately reached the quarterfinals, where they were beaten 0-2 by England.

Marcus Berg

In the summer of 2010, striker Marcus Berg joined PSV on loan from HSV, but after a disappointing season the forward left again. Representing Sweden, Berg was active at the 2018 World Cup together with Toivonen, and the former PSV striker was also a regular starter at that tournament for the Scandinavian country.

Also Oscar Hiljemark, who was active for PSV from 2013 to 2015, was active for Sweden at the 2018 World Cup. Ultimately, this was the last final tournament for Hiljemark.
