Future at PSV uncertain, transfer seems like an option: 'He fits better with Ajax than with PSV'

After a reasonably to good season, his future at PSV is by no means certain. He is visibly getting better and better, but since his arrival at PSV he has nonetheless decided matches for the club.

By now, he was also able to add two national league titles and a Johan Cruyff Shield to his honours list, but Couhaib Driouech wants more. A starting spot, and with the return of Ruben van Bommel, that will be difficult. Still, the forward has already experienced some fantastic moments at PSV and set the Philips Stadium on fire on several occasions.

Driouech, however, still does not know whether he will be a PSV player next season. The 24-year-old winger is not a fixed value in the squad of coach Peter Bosz and has one wish: to play.

In mid-2024, Driouech made the move from Excelsior to PSV. Largely due to the fierce competition on the flanks—first from Noa Lang, later among others Ivan Perisic—the lightning-fast forward was unable to become an undisputed first-team regular. "I think I’ve become a really good player, and that shows in training and in moments during matches. I came here to become a better player, and I think I’m at that point now," says Driouech to Voetbal International.

"I’ve been lucky enough to experience many great things, play against great teams, and beat weird teams. I’ve had special evenings and been champion twice. Now we have to see what’s best for me", Driouech refers to his future, which he cannot say with certainty whether it is with PSV. "I want to play anyway. If that’s here, then it’s here. If not, I have to keep looking."

"I have reached the point where I know that I can, and I really, really want to show it," said the winger. "If it’s not here, it has to be somewhere else, but I wouldn’t be afraid to take on a new challenge either." Driouech is looking for consistency, in play and minutes. "Yes. I just want to be consistent, show what I can do. Every week and preferably at the highest level. I want to show it to the world. Maybe I would fit better with a team that plays a bit more on the counter," Driouech adds, pointing to PSV’s style of play. 

Well, in that respect, Driouech perhaps fits better with Ajax or Feyenoord, which since the beginning of this calendar year and since the arrival of Dick Advocaat has been playing much more withdrawn than before. For Ajax it has applied for some seasons in a row that more is being played from deep. In that respect, Driouech, with his pace and depth in his game, would fit better with Ajax and/or Feyenoord than with PSV. Time will tell.
