A Belgian top player and a possible figurehead for PSV? “Don’t underestimate what a strong guy that is.”
1 min readFor PSV, the 2025/2026 season is over after a convincing 5-1 victory over FC Twente. This also means that Marcel Brands and Earnest Stewart can prepare for a busy transfer summer, as a number of PSV players may leave.
The chance is indeed high that Ricardo Pepi will leave this coming summer, along with Joey Veerman, Ismael Saibari and Sergino Dest. The first of them seemed set to move definitively to Fulham, but this transfer was called off at the last moment.
Despite this, the chance is high that the American striker will still leave PSV this coming summer and at Sportnieuws.nl two surprising names are mentioned as possible successors for Pepi. ''Now I want to put forward two sexy options: Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United and Romelu Lukaku, who is allowed to leave Napoli'', says presenter Damian Vlottes at Sportnieuws.nl
According to Robert Maaskant, however, PSV would not do well to take over Lukaku because of his age (33). ''You shouldn't go for Lukaku with Ivan Perisic there. Then the transfers afterwards will yield nothing at all. But from a sporting point of view, it certainly could fit. Don't misjudge what kind of strong guy that is, which you of course could benefit from'', said the former coach.
Maaskant also has some doubts about Zirkzee. ''With Zirkzee, I just think he has played far too little. Not only at Manchester United, but really everywhere. He has played for Bologna, but that’s already two years ago as well,'' said the former coach of, among others, NAC Breda and Willem II.

Zirkzee als Pepi-opvolger snap ik de hype niet. Als die man "te weinig gespeeld heeft" dan krijg je bij ons dezelfde situatie, vooral met hoe zwaar de CL-voetbalplanning wordt. Tbh liever iemand die gewoon 30+ wedstrijden in de benen heeft.
Zirkzee snap ik ook niet helemaal. Als hij het bij Man United en verder nergens echt op pakt, wat is dan het idee hier? Ja je haalt kwaliteit, maar als hij bij PSV weer op de bank eindigt, dan hebben we die transferperiode echt weggegooid...
Lukaku (33) met Perisic erbij klinkt als "op korte termijn scoren" maar het gaat wrs ook geld en salarissen kosten. Tbh ik zie wel de power, maar PSV heeft juist tempo en doorontwikkeling nodig na dit seizoen.
"Vergis je niet in wat voor sterke gozer dat is" klopt dan wel, maar PSV moet het toch vooral laten renderen in het systeem. Als Perisic er staat, heb je een plan B nodig dat wél doordraait naar de rest van je transfers. Anders ga je straks weer dezelfde discussies voeren in oktober.
Lukaku 33 jaar met Perisic erbij is echt een riskante mix, ngl. Maaskant zegt wel dat het sportief kan passen, maar hoe gaan we dat fitness- en doorlooptijd technisch managen als er straks weer blessures komen? Imo geen "must sign".
Romelu met Perisic erbij klinkt nog steeds als het soort plan dat je in de winter al wil maken, maar Maaskant heeft wel gelijk over leeftijd. Tbh als Pepi wegvalt, dan wil ik een spits die ook 2027 nog loopt, niet alleen een 'sterke gozer'-verhaal.
5-1 tegen Twente was lekker, nu doorpakken natuurlijk. Maar Lukaku op z'n 33e met Perisic erbij... tbh dat klinkt als een "tijdelijke oplossing" ipv structurele winst. Josh Zirkzee lijkt me ook geen zekerheid, te weinig minutes voor PSV.
