Valentijn Driessen: “He is the best possible candidate.”
1 min readFor two weeks, the debate about the head coach position of the Netherlands national team has been in full swing since Ronald Koeman announced he would stop. Also Valentijn Driessen has repeatedly weighed in on the discussion about who would be the best candidate for Oranje.
That is how Peter Bosz was linked several times as a successor to Ronald Koeman, despite the fact that Bosz has extended his contract with PSV until 2028. The coach has indicated that he is currently not available.
According to Driessen, for that reason there is only one real candidate left. ''The Catalan Pep Guardiola may be unattainable; De Jong must have a very good reason, if he does not want to end up in conflict with Arne Slot as the new head coach of Oranje. He is the most conceivable candidate and he also holds a Dutch passport. Only the financial million-euro arrangements between Slot and Liverpool at his dismissal in May could potentially form an imagined stumbling block'', the journalist writes in his column on behalf of De Telegraaf.
The reporter can’t help but also mention Peter Bosz in his column. ''Liverpool has pulled the plug on the cooperation. The club will not stand in his way of a departure to a national association, where a move to another club would likely lead to mandatory financial compensation. Peter Bosz and Erik ten Hag have made it clear—half-heartedly and crystal-clear—that they are not available for the role of national team coach,'' Driessen continues.
At Slot, the journalist sees something strikingly different compared with Bosz regarding the national team coaching role. ''Slot keeps his lips tightly sealed about it. What is revealing for the big communicator Slot. He has been in contact with almost all the media, directly or via WhatsApp, and refused everywhere to slam the door shut for Oranje'', according to Driessen.

"Hij is de best denkbare kandidaat" is een flinke uitspraak van Driessen. Maar goed, Slot heeft wel het type rust en structuur dat je zoekt. Alleen denk ik dat de echte vraag is of de KNVB geduld heeft, want elke maand gedoe kost gewoon momentum. 👀
Wie zit er eigenlijk op te wachten als Oranje bondscoach? Want dit hele gedoe lijkt vooral media-voer. Als ik eerlijk ben: ik zou Slot liever niet kwijt willen, al is Oranje natuurlijk ook een droom. 🔥
Slot houdt z'n lippen stijf op elkaar? Dat vind ik niet erg, maar het wordt wel een beetje Ajax-achtig met "via WhatsApp alles open laten". 😅 Als hij straks toch gaat, dan wil ik wel zien dat PSV er niet mee achterblijft. 🔥
Ik snap dat Driessen Bosz blijft noemen, maar PSV heeft hem juist tot 2028. Als Bosz niet beschikbaar is, dan is dat toch geen half verhaal. En die "financiële miljoenenafspraken" bij Slot, ja dat kan een struikelblok zijn, maar dat maakt hem niet ineens minder geschikt.
Slot "contact gehad met bijna alle media" klinkt ook als een framing. Bij Bosz wordt gezegd "Liverpool de stekker eruit", maar bij Slot alsof hij al in Oranje zit. Naar mijn idee laat Bosz tenminste realistisch weten waar hij staat, dit voelt meer politiek.
Bosz gelinkt ondanks verlenging tot 2028 is echt zo'n praatje dat zichzelf in stand houdt. Als Liverpool "de stekker uit de samenwerking" trekt, dan is Bosz toch gewoon niet ineens beschikbaar... tbh. Benieuwd of Oranje echt gaat gokken op timing, of dat ze gewoon wachten op een makkelijke exit.
"De Jong moet een heel goede reden hebben" klopt misschien, maar ik vind het vooral wishful thinking. Als Arne gewoon wil doorpakken met PSV en doorselecteren, dan is dat al reden genoeg... en PSV moet niet het pauzelandschap zijn.
Pep Guardiola als kandidaat is natuurlijk mooi, maar Valentijn Driessen doet alsof het zomaar kan. Tbh, als Frenkie of Guardiola eerst moet afvallen, dan blijft Slot toch gewoon de meest logische PSV-figuur qua profiel.
"Hij is de best denkbare kandidaat" over De Jong... oke, maar ik snap ook dat hij straks klem zit tussen Oranje en Slot. Zeker als PSV straks weer afhankelijk wordt van vertrekverhalen. Toch is het wel logisch dat ze om een Nederlandse paspoortkandidaat denken, want anders wordt het gedoe.
