These former PSV players represented Mexico at the World Cup | “The most popular of them all is still a PSV fan”

1 min read

Mexico has the honor of kicking off the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday evening Dutch time, which the country is hosting together with Canada and the United States. As in 2010, the Mexicans will play the opening match against South Africa.

Above all, in this century a number of former PSV players were well represented in the Mexico squad. PSVInside.nl lists a number of Mexican players with a PSV past who came into action for Mexico at least at a World Cup.

Andres Guardado

The best-known and most popular Mexican player with a PSV past from the past fifteen years is perhaps Andrés Guardado. Guardado was active for PSV from 2014 to 2017 and played no fewer than 180 internationals for Mexico between 2005 and 2023, and the midfielder played at five different World Cups.

Guardado played at the World Cups 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. In 2022, Mexico was eliminated in the group stage, while in each of the four previous tournaments it went wrong in the round of 16 and in 2014 the Mexicans lost to the Netherlands in stoppage time after a controversial penalty.

Hector Moreno

Hector Moreno, who was active at PSV from 2015 to 2017, also had a rich career with the Mexico national team. The former defender played 132 internationals from 2007 to 2023 and was active at four World Cups.

Moreno played at the World Cups in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. At the 2014 World Cup, the former defender broke his shin in the match against the Netherlands in the round of 16, and at the 2018 World Cup Moreno missed the round of 16 against Brazil (2-0) due to a suspension.

Hirving Lozano

In the summer of 2017, Hirving Lozano joined PSV and the Mexican already made a name for himself at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017, where Mexico ultimately crashed out in the semi-finals against Germany (4-1). Lozano was also active for Mexico at the 2018 World Cup and the 2022 World Cup.

At the 2018 World Cup, the wing forward was responsible for the only goal in the match against the reigning world champions Germany (0-1), and in the second match against South Korea (1-2) Lozano provided an assist. In 2022, Lozano started in all group matches, but the winger couldn’t make his mark and Mexico was eliminated in the group stage.

Other Mexicans with a PSV past who represented their country at the World Cup in football include, among others:
Érick Gutiérrez (2018 & 2022)
Carlos Salcido (2006, 2010 & 2014)
Francisco 'Maza' Rodríguez (2006, 2010 & 2014)
The most popular of all is, in any case, still a PSV fan because Andres Guardado regularly lets it be known that he is still following PSV. This also applies, of course, to Hirving Lozano and Érick Gutiérrez, but that's besides the point.
