These Canadians with a PSV past played at the World Cup
1 min readCanada, together with Mexico and neighboring country USA, has the honor of hosting the 2026 World Cup. For Canada, it is the third appearance at the World Cup after 1986 and 2022.
At the first World Cup in 1986, PSV player Randy Samuel was active for Canada. That name most likely means nothing to most PSV fans, but the former defender was under contract with PSV from 1985 to 1990 and, however, could not break through at the club, which is why the Canadian was also loaned out several times.
Canada was eliminated in the group stage at the 1986 World Cup after defeats against France, Hungary, and the Soviet Union. In the end, it took until 2022 before Canada qualified again for the global final tournament.
At the World Cup in Qatar, Atiba Hutchinson, who was active at PSV from 2010 to 2013, was selected to represent Canada’s national team, making the former PSV player the oldest player to come on in action during the World Cup in Qatar. As in 1986, Canada was eliminated in the group stage after defeats against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco, and Hutchinson played in all three matches
Where Canada left the tournament in 1986 without scoring a single goal, it was up to Alphonso Davies of FC Bayern München in 2022 to make the first Canadian goal at a World Cup. As early as the second minute, Davies headed the ball hard into the net in the match against Croatia of current PSV player Ivan Perisic, but despite that, the Croatians won 4-1 and after two matches it was all over for Hutchinson & Co.

Davies die al na 2 minuten raak kopte tegen Kroatië... en alsnog 4-1. Imo dat zegt alles, PSV-verleden of niet, je kan het niet alleen van 1 goal laten afhangen. 🔥⚽
Atiba Hutchinson op het WK 2022 als oudste speler, 100% respect. Maar Canada was weer gewoon kansloos in de groep met verliezen van België, Kroatië en Marokko, idk wat je precies kunt hopen met zo'n selectie.
Idk, ik snap wel dat je trots bent op de PSV-koppelingen, maar het artikel laat ook zien dat Canada weinig marge heeft. Drie duels in actie voor Hutchinson en meteen eruit, dan moet je van 2026 gewoon meer verwachten.
Davies die al in minuut 2 scoort maar je verliest nog 4-1, dat is echt zo'n Canada-scenario. En tegen Kroatië met Perisic erbij... tja, die oude link met PSV blijft mooi, maar resultaat is meh 💀

Atiba Hutchinson weer genoemd, echt herkenbaar. Van PSV-verleden naar WK, maar Canada maakt het wel steeds lastig zichzelf. Toch vond ik zijn inzet op Qatar wel top 👏
Randy Samuel bij PSV en dan op het WK 1986, dat is echt zo'n vergeten naam. Jammer dat hij nooit doorbrak, maar wel cool dat er zo'n PSV link is met Canada.
