Support for Dick Advocaat in the matter: “It went the other way around”
1 min readThe return of former PSV coach Dick Advocaat as head coach of the national team of Curaçao caused a lot of discussion in the Netherlands. For instance, Johan Derksen was not pleased with the way Advocaat returned, and De Snor also felt that Fred Rutten has been enormously damaged by the native of The Hague.
Despite this, Advocaat also receives the necessary support. For example, Jeroen Kapteijns and Mike Verweij, sports journalists on behalf of De Telegraaf, believe that too much is being played out against Dick Advocaat personally.

''Advocaat is being played up enormously, while in the Netherlands everyone is still upset that Johan Cruyff did not take the Dutch national team to the World Cup in 1994. It is not the case that Advocaat, like a kind of Rasputin, was stirring things up that he absolutely wanted to go back. It went the other way around. The players really wanted to go to the World Cup with Advocaat. Just like the Orange players back then really wanted to go with Cruyff. That is where that question came from,'' Kapteijns says in the podcast.
The journalist is of the opinion that it is good that Advocaat has returned due to the click with the players group. "He could then have refused it, but it also flattered him and it gives him the chance to do a World Cup at the age of 78. That opportunity will never come again, because I don’t think he will be asked at 82. Although you can never rule that out with Dick Advocaat. People are playing terribly on the man. It even surprised him himself. In the end, he agreed, but the call came from the players, and from the sponsor. And if you see how he stands out there with those players on the pitch, then you can see that it clicks. So you can also imagine that that call came about," the PSV watcher said.
Verweij agrees with Kapteijns, but does add a caveat regarding the comparison to Johan Cruyff. ''Cruyff had a package of demands like Farioli at Ajax, and that could not be accommodated by the KNVB. But I do agree with Jeroen. Dick Advocaat simply really wanted to go to the World Cup. That situation involving his daughter—I want to stay very far away from that. Dick just really wants it. And the players wanted him back. Then the pressure became so great. He could have said that he wasn’t going to do it, but he said properly that he would only start thinking about it once Fred Rutten would step down. He hasn’t been sawing away at his chair legs'', said Verweij.

Fred Rutten beschadigd? Kijk, ik snap dat mensen dat koppelen, maar in het stuk gaat het vooral over druk vanuit spelers en sponsor. Advocaat "heeft keurig gezegd" dat hij pas verder kijkt als Rutten stopt. Dat is geen stoelpoten-actie, dat is juist volwassen handelen. Dit is peak non-drama tbh 😅
Derksen en De Snor doen alsof Advocaat een soort puppetmaster is, maar dit klinkt juist als een terugkeer waar iedereen beter van wordt. En ja, ik vraag me wel af hoe Rutten hier emotioneel bij zat, want die beschadiging wordt toch ook niet zomaar verzonnen... maar dat Advocaat eerst zat te pushen, daar geloof ik minder 👀
Het is ook wel belangrijk dat Kapteijns zegt dat de roep vanuit de spelers kwam. Advocaat "wilde" gewoon WK, dat past niet bij dat Rasputin-verhaal.
"Er wordt enorm op de man Advocaat gespeeld" ja precies, dat is het probleem. Iedereen zoekt meteen drama rond namen, terwijl het gewoon een match is tussen coach en groep. Ik wil alleen dat Rutten ook netjes uit de wind blijft, want dat gedoe is imo ongepast. 🙄
Die zin "Het is andersom gegaan" blijft hangen, en ik denk dat het klopt. Als spelers en sponsor echt wilden, dan is het geen one-man show van Advocaat. Wel vind ik het wrang dat Fred Rutten zo beschadigd wordt in het verhaal, want dat helpt niemand. 🚀
Ik vond die vergelijking met Cruijff wel grappig maar ook gevaarlijk. Cruijff speelde een heel pakket hard, daar kan KNVB nee op zeggen. Bij Advocaat lijkt het meer "grote kans om nog eens te gaan" en daarom is het andersom verhaal logischer.
"Het is andersom gegaan" is precies wat ik dacht. Als de spelersgroep hem graag wil, dan is het niet ineens sabotage, ook al wordt het zo verkocht. Bovendien klikte hij toch altijd met zo'n groep, dus die energie op het veld zegt genoeg 🔥
tbh ik snap die steun wel. Als je ziet hoe Advocaat het zegt en hoe de groep reageert, klinkt het eerder als "wij willen hem" dan "hij komt stoken". En die Cruijff vergelijking vind ik op zich oké, maar het punt blijft dat overal te veel op de man wordt gespeeld.
Tbh vind ik echt dat ze Advocaat nu te veel op de man spelen. Kapteijns zegt het goed, de spelers wilden hem, niet andersom. Als je op het veld ziet dat het klikt, is het meteen minder "politiek" dan mensen doen lijken.
Snap die steun wel tbh. Als spelers en sponsor druk zetten, dan wordt het geen spelletje tegen Rutten alleen.
Tbh i snap die steun wel. Advocaat kiest niet zomaar voor Oranje-achtige drama, maar volgens Kapteijns was de vraag vanuit de spelers en sponsor. Dat maakt het verhaal "tegen Fred Rutten in" ineens een stuk minder zwart-wit.
