Reaction to rumors surrounding Mark van Bommel: “A really good fit”

Last Monday, Mike Verweij from De Telegraaf broke the news that the former captain of PSV would be at the top of the list at the KBVB after farewell had previously been taken from Rudi Garcia. "A very good match," the former defender says to HLN about a possible position as national coach for the former Netherlands international.
The former international of De Red Devils worked with Van Bommel at Royal Antwerp FC and, in the 2022/2023 season, won the national double with the former PSV player along the touchline. In addition, during a broadcast of Rondo on 9 February of this year, the 127-time international described Van Bommel as the best coach he has ever had.
Also tactically, the former Ajax player, who was active for Belgium at three World Cups, speaks about the PSV icon. ''In every match we knew how we were going to apply pressure. How we were going to build up, what our game plan was. And always with a positive feeling. Never retreating. But realistic, not like: we’re just going to put pressure on and do whatever. "Nooit achteruit. Wel realistisch." Dat is dus de PSV-saus. Maar bruh, bondscoach of niet, je moet ook spelers hebben die dat kunnen uitvoeren. Belgium heeft talent, alleen de selectie moet het wel toelaten.
Na Rudi Garcia hoop ik gewoon dat ze kiezen voor iemand die teams laat geloven. Wat Alderweireld zegt over "nooit achteruit" en "wel realistisch" klinkt als PSV-mentaliteit, maar dan voor 11 tegen 11. W, maar toch wel spannend of het systeem blijft werken tegen sterkere tegenstanders. ⚽
Keihard vind ik vooral het voorbeeld van Club Brugge in de beker. Dat is iets wat je als coach kan doen, namelijk direct ingrijpen en niet wachten tot je volledig wegzakt. Als dat ook met België lukt, dan is dit geen toeval. 👀
"Een hele goede match" is ook wel echt een duidelijke endorsement. Bij PSV was het vaak al zijn kracht: intensiteit met structuur, niet gokken. Ben benieuwd of hij dat op bondscoachniveau ook door de verfijnde voetbalcultuur heen kan trekken.
Toby die Van Bommel "bovenaan" zet bij tactiek + people management, dat klinkt wel heel overtuigend. Als België dit pakt, dan kunnen we eindelijk weer zo'n team zien dat vanaf minuut 1 druk durft spelen. 🚀
