News from Belgium regarding Mark van Bommel
1 min readEarlier this week, De Telegraaf reported that Mark van Bommel would be at the top of the list to become the new head coach of Belgium. Earlier, our southern neighbors had already said goodbye to Rudi Garcia, and as a result Van Bommel would be, in the eyes of the KBVB, the dream successor.
The PSV icon had already previously worked as coach of Royal Antwerp FC from 2022 to 2024. In his first season, Van Bommel managed to win the double with the Belgian club, and in the summer of 2024, both parties parted ways.
Since then, the former PSV player has been without an employer, but that could soon change. Transfer journalist Nicolò Schira reports that the KBVB has opened the first talks with Van Bommel.
The Belgian association would like to offer the former midfielder a contract through the 2028 European Championship. However, it is still unclear whether Van Bommel has already responded to this offer.
Earlier, former Belgian international Toby Alderweireld already told Het Laatste Nieuws that Van Bommel would be a good fit to become head coach of the Red Devils. In addition, Alderweireld described the PSV icon as the best coach he has ever had.

Gefeliciteerd Antwerp-kwaliteiten... maar voor mij blijft het vooral gokken of hij bij België tactisch genoeg differentie maakt. i doubt hij gaat meteen alle problemen fixen, want selecties zijn daar ook politiek. 🤡
stekker erin voor onze PSV-icoon 🔥 maar ik zie ook risico: bondscoach is not the same as club coaching. with Belgium, expectations are always max, and one bad tournament and they will turn on him.
"contract willen aanbieden tot het EK 2028" hmm dat is wel lange termijn. als hij slim is, maar tbqh bondscoach is een andere wereld dan Antwerp. Toch wel respect, want beste trainer die Alderweireld ooit had is geen kleine uitspraak. 🔥
If dit klopt dan is dat echt een hoofdpijn voor onze concurrenten, Van Bommel weet hoe je moet winnen in België. 👀 Ik ben vooral benieuwd of hij dezelfde spelersbeleving kan overzetten naar een bondscoachgroep met ego's en verschillende clubstijlen.

tbh i was worried Van Bommel would be "stuck" after Antwerp... but opening talks with the KBVB is a proper upgrade 👀. if he gets a contract until the Euro 2028, he can build something steady, unlike the usual short-term chaos.
"De gedroomde opvolger" klinkt mooi, maar ik denk dat Van Bommel pas echt getest wordt als het team onderpresteert. Zijn stijl kan agressief zijn, en bij België moet je dan niet te vroeg de knop omzetten. Wel een boost dat Alderweireld hem zo hoog inschat.
If Belgium actually go for Van Bommel, that is huge. Alderweireld saying he was the best coach he ever had is telling. Question is if the KBVB can give him a clear plan, not just vibes.
ngl dit past wel bij een trainer die de lat hoog legt. Double met Antwerp zegt genoeg, dus ik snap de keuze van de KBVB. Maar ik wil ook weten hoe hij omgaat met druk op niveau WK-playoffs en niet alleen Belgische top.
