PSV icon serious candidate for Feyenoord coaching job? “When you look at who is available…”

1 min read

Last weekend, news broke that Robin van Persie has been dismissed as coach of Feyenoord. True, the Rotterdam club finished last season under the direction of the former top striker in second place, but with a street-length deficit behind PSV.

This was enough reason for the new club leadership to say goodbye to RVP, and so Feyenoord has to look for a new trainer for next season. Earlier, Oliver Glasner, a successful coach at Crystal Palace, was mentioned.

Nicky van der Gijp, a Feyenoord supporter and son of former PSV player Rene van der Gijp, does not see the Austrian coach coming to Rotterdam. ''Glasner was mentioned, but that can hardly be. That man did brilliantly in England and won three trophies with Crystal Palace. He earned 5 million there and would then never come to Feyenoord. You might earn 1 or 2 million there, although Slot has earned more with bonuses included,'' Van der Gijp said on De Oranjezomer.

Therefore, Nicky thinks Feyenoord should look for other names that are more realistic to bring in for the club from Rotterdam-South. The name of PSV icon Mark van Bommel is also mentioned here.

Van Bommel was PSV’s coach from 2018 until the end of 2019 and was dismissed due to disappointing results, after which the former midfielder was appointed at VfL Wolfsburg in 2021 and, in October of that year, once again had to step down. The last club where Van Bommel was a coach is the Belgian Royal Antwerp FC.

With the team, the club icon of PSV won the national title and the national cup. Despite this, Van der Gijp does not see the arrival of Van Bommel at “his” Feyenoord as a good idea, unlike the sports marketer and also Feyenoord supporter Chris Woerts.

''When you look at who is available, you think of Mark van Bommel, and Chris Woerts is, by the way, crazy about him. I'm not so much into... But he has, in principle, done well at Antwerp, although he was sacked at Wolfsburg and PSV; I don't know if that's enough. And Sébastien Pocognoli is mentioned. He has been a coach in Belgium, and that's where Rigaux knows him from'', said Van der Gijp.
