1 min readFor a few seasons now, Mauro Junior has almost been impossible to overlook at PSV. The versatile Brazilian was also this season an important link for Peter Bosz's side, and that is why Mauro has also been included by ESPN in the Team of the Season.
Mauro switched often this season between a position as a defensive midfielder and left-back, partly because captain Jerdy Schouten was moved one line further back by Bosz. In Anass Salah-Eddine’s absence, the Brazilian regularly played as a left-wing defender.
According to ESPN, Mauro is always good for a pass grade. ''Wherever Peter Bosz puts him, Mauro Júnior always earns a passing grade at PSV. Even so, he made an - above all before the winter break; the best phase of PSV this season - excellent impression at '6' with the champions'', writes the sports broadcaster.
The broadcaster also writes that Mauro, without any objection, plays his matches when he is not on his favorite position. ''The versatile Brazilian himself gives preference to the left-back position, but any reluctance was absolutely not visible in his play'', ESPN said.
However, the sports broadcaster prefers the Brazilian to play as a midfielder. ''When Mauro plays as a defensive midfielder, he uses his intensity to win balls back quickly and is therefore crucial in Bosz's pressing style. The Brazilian also anticipates well defensively on the spaces around him and regularly closes off passing lanes'', ESPN concludes.

"Haalt bij PSV altijd een voldoende" is cap, maar ok dit seizoen was hij wel heel consistent. Daarvoor vind ik hem op linksback toch wat meer compleet dan op de 6, want daar is die kleine twijfel in duels soms zichtbaar. Verdedigend banger, opbouw blijft af en toe mid...
Op basis van wat ESPN noemt snap ik waarom ze hem Team van het Seizoen zetten. Controlerende 6 met pressing is zijn rol, en hij dipt passlijnen goed dicht. Wel vind ik het lastig dat Bosz hem continue moet schuiven door blessures en keuzes, want dan mist PSV misschien een vaste structuur in één linie. 👀

The quote about no dislike for the left-back position is believable. Still, imo his defensive anticipation is the real weapon, not just his position. When he is allowed to recover ground fast, PSV look way more stable, especially against counters 👀

Maar tbh als hij zelf voorkeur voor linksback heeft, moet hij dan ook consistent dezelfde impact als op 6 brengen. anders blijft het een soort klus-koning.
Ik snap het "altijd een voldoende" wel, maar ik wil ook zien dat hij als controlerende 6 niet alleen heroverd, maar ook de rust bewaart. Tegen teams die ons druk zetten kan het soms net iets beter in opbouw, al maakt zijn pressing wel verschil. 👀
i swear Mauro is onze "no drama" man. Als Schouten naar achteren schuift en Salah-Eddine niet speelt, staat hij er gewoon weer. Toch twijfel ik, want als hij op 6 precies genoeg is, maar als linksback zijn rugdekking soms net niet op tijd is. 🔥
Nice dat ESPN hem noemt op 6, zeker vóór de winterstop was PSV best scherp. Toch blijft het mij opvallend dat zijn pressing impact het beste tot zijn recht komt als hij wat meer ruimte krijgt tussen de linies.
I mean ESPN zegt "altijd een voldoende" en tbh dat klopt wel vaak. Maar ik hoop dat Bosz niet blijft gokken met die positie-switches, want als Schouten niet speelt dan wordt het soms een beetje puzzelen.
Mauro Júnior is echt die irritante zekerheid achter de schermen. Zet hem linksback of op 6 en hij levert steeds dezelfde nette arbeid, geen drama.

Mauro Junior is echt de human Swiss army knife van Bosz, en het is grappig hoe ESPN zegt dat hij altijd een voldoende haalt. Als Schouten achterin zit, dan voelt Mauro als het slot op de deur. 🔥
Fair play voor Mauro Junior, maar ik hoop dat we niet vergeten dat hij het beste rendeert als 6. Als Bosz hem als linksback blijft gebruiken, moet hij echt ook defensief sneller keuzes maken. ESPN zegt "altijd een voldoende", maar ik wil juist pieken zien, niet alleen stabiliteit. 👏⚽
He is basically our tactical Swiss army knife lol. If Schouten drops back, Mauro fills in and somehow the structure stays standing. W for Bosz, but also w for Mauro that he never sulks.
I agree with ESPN that his best impact is as a control midfielder. When he presses and closes passing lanes, Bosz's system looks so much cleaner. As left-back he is useful too, but he is not as effective in the buildup.
That "always a sufficient" line feels true tbh. Mauro does the dirty work whether it is 6, left-back or even left wing defense. Peak level for squad depth and pressing 🔥
