Ruud Gullit advises KNVB regarding the new national team coach

1 min read

Since last week, the debate in the Netherlands about who should succeed Ronald Koeman as national team coach has completely erupted. After his team was eliminated at the World Cup in North America, Koeman announced that he would step down, which is why football fans and football analysts are now discussing his successor.

Among others, the names of Arne Slot, Pep Guardiola and Michael Reiziger are mentioned. The name of PSV coach Peter Bosz is also often put forward, despite the fact that Bosz renewed his contract with PSV in February, extending it to mid-2028.

If it were up to former PSV player Ruud Gullit, the KNVB would put a national team coach forward who chooses to 'guard the Dutch way of playing football.' The European champion of 1988 says this in De Telegraaf.

In the process, the captain from 1988 looks back at the World Cup in North America. ''The World Cup has resulted in a major disappointment for the Netherlands national team and for everyone who supports Oranje. Personally, I had expected a lot from national coach Ronald Koeman and his players. The group stage was fine, and you expect the team to grow further in the tournament afterwards. But the decision not to play their own game against Morocco has proved fatal for Oranje,'' Gullit opens in his column.

During the World Cup, the former PSV player was active as an analyst for the Qatari television channel beIN Sports. ''The surprise among former internationals from England, Spain, France and other countries with whom I followed the World Cup as an analyst was such that I couldn’t defend myself anymore. They all wondered where the Netherlands had gone that they knew. Why didn’t Oranje do what Oranje is good at? It also surprised me'', the former PSV player tells candidly.

Therefore, the former Dutch international advises the KNVB, when it comes to appointing a new national team coach. ''It is important that he looks for a national team coach who safeguards the Dutch way of playing football in any case and combines it with delivering energy. If you see how much work all the teams put in, then you cannot fall behind if you want to play a role of significance with Oranje on the world stage'', Gullit said.

That quote about "control first" is cap if we cant dominate second balls. Need intensity early, not just possession stats. W, PSV. ⚽

Eens. If we get the wing backs higher and keep the pivot protected, this turns into a proper statement performance. Still worried about set pieces though, PSV cant give away free headers. 👀

Eens. But ngl, that defensive line spacing looked messy last time we faced a quick front three. If they dont tighten up, this plan is mid. 💀

I like the idea of pushing the fullbacks higher, but tbh Sangare and Veerman have to cover the space behind or we get punished on counters. Props for trying it though. 👀

Goossens was clean on the ball and thats why these chances kept coming. But I want him to take one more touch inside, shoot earlier, because the last pass too often gets blocked. Come on, dont waste that position! 🔥⚽

"PSV Inside" really nails it, we still need one more ball-carrier who can beat a man under pressure. When the press comes, our first pass sometimes looks too safe. 😅

"PSV's pressing looked intense" ... ok but intensity without control is just running. When the press breaks, our shape has to be better. Otherwise, it becomes a highlight reel for the opponent.

Lol this is giving me flashbacks to games where PSV had 60% possession but no bite. If the fullbacks dont overlap earlier, youre basically asking the wingers to do all the work.

Watching the midfield screeners... tbh they looked a little too open when PSV lost the ball. I love the intent, but we need tighter transitions, especially against a counter-press team.

If PSV go with that midfield shape again, i hope Tillman gets freedom to turn, not just run at the line. Otherwise we will be stuck recycling and losing momentum in transitions. 🔥

If PSV keep building like this, then El Ghazi has to be more aggressive in the half-spaces. Right now it feels like the ball goes to him a bit late, and defenses are already set. Still though, that work rate is promising.
