“Mark van Bommel wants to add former PSV assistants and former AZ player to the technical staff of the Red Devils”

Earlier this week, news emerged that PSV icon Mark van Bommel will be the head coach of Belgium at least until the 2028 European Championship. Earlier this week, the KBVB said farewell to Rudi Garcia, under whom the quarterfinal of the World Cup in North America was reached.

Because of this, Van Bommel was at the top of the list to become the new national team coach of the Red Devils. Among other things, the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reported that the former PSV player had reached an agreement, down to a number of details, on a contract through the 2028 European Championship and that a final agreement is expected as soon as possible.

Now the same outlet reports that Van Bommel also wants to add Maarten Martens, the former AZ coach, to his technical staff. Martens, moreover a former player of the Red Devils, was dismissed at the start of this calendar year as head coach of Alkmaar Zaanstreek despite a 6-0 victory over Ajax in the KNVB Cup round of 16.

''Also Mark van Bommel, who will sign his contract with the football association up to and including 2028 in the short term, opts for several fellow countrymen in his entourage. But it will therefore not be only Dutch people as assistants: the technical staff will also include at least one Belgian, with Maarten Martens as well'', as Het Nieuwsblad writes.

Besides Martens, former assistant coach of PSV Boudewijn Zenden is also a candidate to become part of the new technical staff of our southern neighbors. Also Reinier Robbemond, who was an assistant to Van Bommel at PSV, is a candidate to join the technical staff.

The staff of the now former national team coach Rudi Garcia consisted, in fact, of French compatriots. Van Bommel is therefore going in the opposite direction and wants especially Dutch input within his staff, and with Martens the former PSV player has also made room for a Belgian.

Earlier it seemed that Martens was on track to become the new coach of Heart of Midlothian FC, i.e. Hearts, out of Scotland. However, that is off the table.

''Martens is actually a head coach: until the beginning of this calendar year he was working at AZ as a T1. Then he was dismissed after disappointing results. After that, Martens was among others in the picture at Anderlecht, but now he therefore chooses to function from now on as a T2. If everything goes well, Martens will become one of the assistants to national team coach Van Bommel'', so concludes Het Nieuwsblad.
