Mark van Bommel experienced a nightmare in Antwerp: “Then I went to a hotel”
1 min readIn December 2019, club icon Mark van Bommel was dismissed as coach of PSV after a run of poor results. In the summer of 2021, Van Bommel ended up at VfL Wolfsburg, and in October 2021, the former midfielder also had to step aside there, before being appointed as coach of Royal Antwerp FC in the summer of 2022.
With the team from Antwerp, Van Bommel became national champion in his first season, and in the summer of 2024 the Antwerps and the former footballer went their separate ways. During his time as coach of Antwerp, Van Bommel also experienced a less enjoyable moment.
On this, the former PSV captain tells Allround Golf. ''In Antwerp, I slept in a hotel, because after a month someone with a pistol was waiting for the garage of my apartment'', begins Van Bommel.
''Luckily I could put the car in reverse, but I did manage to wreck the entire back of my car. Then I went to a hotel and arranged a room. And that was really great,'' continues the former international.

In 2011, as a footballer for AC Milan, Van Bommel received advice from the team manager, and the former PSV player has followed that advice to this day. ''In 2011 I went to Milan and the team manager already said there: 'Mark, never take the same route home'. And since then I haven't done that either. Always be on the lookout and always keep an eye out, sometimes a circuit at the roundabout or the car reversing on the driveway'', concludes the former captain.

He's always been a control-freak, even off the pitch. The 2011 Milan advice "never same way home" fits, but the fact he ended up in a hotel after that... yeah, that's a hard L.
ngl this story makes me laugh and cringe at the same time. pistool for the garage is insane, but backing the car up like it's a training drill is peak Van Bommel 😂
"Toen ben ik naar een hotel gegaan" ... you can't even blame him. I just hope his family was safe, that's not something you shrug off.
That's genuinely scary stuff... first season Antwerp success and then this "pistol waiting" nightmare. Also the backwards car on the driveway sounds like a PSV-level improvisation lol.
