Ivan Perišić: “It’s hard to choose just one moment.”
1 min readIvan Perisic joined, free of charge, over two years ago to everyone's surprise, at PSV and the 37-year-old winger has since been an important force for the team of Peter Bosz. Perisic can also prepare himself with Croatia for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
For the PSV player, it will be his fourth World Cup after the tournaments in 2014, 2018 and 2022. Despite his 37 years, Perisic is still a great value for the Balkan country and the tally is therefore also at 152 caps.
The PSV player is also very proud to travel to the World Cup for the fourth time. ''I feel enormous pride representing Croatia and I hope to inspire younger generations who dream of following the same path'', the winger tells Sky Sports.
In 2018, Perisic played a major role when Croatia for the first time in history managed to reach the World Cup final. Thus, the PSV player provided the equalizer in the semi-final against England and in the final against France, where the Croatians ultimately lost 4-2.
At the last World Cup in 2022, Croatia finished third, and Perisic therefore finds it difficult to pick his favorite World Cup moment. ''It is difficult to choose just one moment. The entire World Cup in 2018 was unforgettable. Reaching the final stands out for me the most. Even though we didn’t win, it was a historic achievement for Croatia and a moment that united the whole country'', the Croat looks back.
Despite the fact that Croatia has about just four million inhabitants, the Balkan country has been extremely successful in the past two World Cups. ''Croatia may be a small country, but we have shown that with passion, unity and commitment you can compete on the highest stage,'' said Perisic.
Since Croatia’s independence in 1991 and its first appearance at the World Cup in 1998, the national team only missed the 2010 World Cup. “I often look back on the journey our country has taken and what it means to represent Croatia on the world stage. That feeling never loses its value. Every World Cup feels special. No matter how many you play, you never fully get used to its size and importance,” concludes the PSV player.

2018 Kroatië verenigd voor het hele land, maar wij zien vooral zijn impact op het veld hier. Als hij na het WK dezelfde drive brengt, dan is dit echt "goated" voor PSV. 🔥
152 interlands en nog steeds zo'n rol op het hoogste niveau, respect. Toch vind ik het wel spannend dat hij straks misschien net iets minder explosief is op de flank, dan moet Pereiro of Bakayoko (als die speelt) meer arbeid verrichten. ngl, Bosz gaat hier tactisch op moeten bijsturen.
"Het is moeilijk om één moment uit te kiezen" vind ik wel sterk gezegd, maar je voelt dat die finale echt in z'n lijf zit. 4-2 verlies doet pijn, maar die geschiedenis had Kroatië nooit meer weg gekregen. Voor PSV is het wel interessant dat hij daaruit energie haalt. ❤️
Ik snap die keuze voor finale 2018, maar bruh, die halve finale goal tegen Engeland was ook zo clean. En toch zie je dat hij vooral het verenigende gevoel waardeert, niet alleen stats. 👏

tbh ik vind dat hij gelijk heeft, maar ik vraag me wel af hoe Bosz hem fit gaat houden voor het ritme na het WK. 37 is 37, en WK's slurpen energie. 1-2 goede weken en dan weer doorduwen.
152 interlands voor Kroatië op 37-jarige leeftijd... dat is geen toeval. Voor Bosz is dit echt zo'n ervaren vleugel die net op tijd terugzakt en waarde geeft in balbezit. Alleen wel spannend hoe de belastbaarheid blijft met PSV én WK-jaar in zicht.
Tbh ik vind het mooi dat ie die finale benoemt, ook al verloren ze 4-2. Voor Kroatie was het gewoon collectieve magie, en je zag dat landen hun identiteit in dat WK konden gieten. Hopelijk brengt hij dezelfde drive straks naar PSV in de wedstrijden.

Ik snap die quote 100%, tbh. Finale halen, dat hele land verenigd, het is precies waarom WK-voetbal zo blijft trekken. Wel benieuwd hoe Bosz straks zijn rol gebruikt, want 37 jaar is mooi verhaal, maar PSV moet wel tempo houden. 👀
