Former PSV success coach expresses hope: “Last season was decided too early”

1 min read

Last season, PSV became champions for the third time in a row, and this time with overwhelming dominance. Peter Bosz’s team ultimately finished at the top with a lead of nineteen points over number 2 Feyenoord.

Actually, halfway through the season it was no longer a question of whether PSV would become champions, but when PSV would become champions. In the end, Bosz's side were crowned champions on 5 April because second-placed Feyenoord could not get any further than a 0-0 draw with FC Volendam, while PSV, a day earlier, won in spectacular fashion 4-3 against FC Utrecht.

If it were up to Guus Hiddink, the battle for the national title in the 2026/2027 season will be a lot more exciting than last season. Hiddink says this in an interview with the FCUpdate.nl outlet.

''It was already decided too early last season. If you are involved with a club yourself, you naturally want to become champions as quickly as possible, but for the excitement in the Eredivisie it would be nice if the rivalry continues until the last days'', says the born Varssevelder.

Also, according to the former coach, the styling of the selections will play a major role. ''It’s about whether they get the team in order. That applies to Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV. You don’t know what can happen after a World Cup. Often there are still major transfers afterward. PSV loses Saibari, who was still decisive. They need to handle that well,'' Hiddink says.

In conversation with sports broadcaster ESPN, Míchel, Ajax's new coach, indicated he wants to compete for the national title in 2026/2027 and, according to Hiddink, this is a positive development. ''That’s how you have to put it. But in the end it comes down to whether you can get the team in order." With that, the experienced coach is looking above all to a season in which Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV can again push each other to the limit. "For the Eredivisie, it would be great if that rivalry remains in place until the end'', said the born Achterhoeker.

19 points is mad ngl. I do feel Hiddink though, once it was clear it was basically "countdown to the title" not football entertainment.
