Former PSV player prepares for the World Cup: “It still feels bizarre”
1 min readEven the Curaçao of former PSV coach Dick Advocaat is preparing in the meantime for the World Cup in North America. Advocaat has a PSV player, Armando Obispo, in his squad and, in addition, also has the necessary former PSV players at his disposal.
One of these former PSV players is right back Shurandy Sambo. With PSV, Sambo won the national title in 2024, after which the defender left for the English club Burnley in the summer of 2024.
This season, the former PSV player, just like in 2022/2023, played on loan for Sparta Rotterdam. Sambo got plenty of playing time there, with a total of 25 league matches and two cup matches.
Now the defender is preparing, then, for his debut at the World Cup Football and, in conversation with the Eindhovens Dagblad, Sambo gets a tough Tillema to deal with when he is asked whether the World Cup with Curaçao or the championship with PSV is the nicest. ''It is difficult to choose what is precisely nicer. This (World Cup, ed.) is of course also unique. As a boy, I played for Braakhuizen, in Geldrop. You are still so small and you still have so much to learn. Now I may go to a World Cup and it still feels bizarre, even though we qualified months ago already. I would not want to miss it for any amount of gold, but that also applies to the title with PSV'', the Curaçao international replies to PSV watcher Rik Elfrink.

The former PSV player also touches on the atmosphere within Curaçao’s squad. ''We play music on the bus and the vibe is just very relaxed, but at the same time everyone is full of competition and motivation. That’s what defines us. I think other teams are a bit more businesslike than we are. We just do a lot together off the pitch,'' the defender says about it.
Before the squad of Curaçao sets off, Dick Advocaat’s team still plays a friendly match at home against Aruba. ''We are going to play a World Cup and that is great. Matches with incredibly much intensity indeed and for that you have to be fit. That’s what we’re trying to achieve now,'' concludes Sambo.
