Football icon takes a swipe: “I’d leave Jonk at home and take Veerman with me.”

1 min read

In recent days, there has been a lot of discussion about the fact that Joey Veerman is not included in the preliminary squad for Oranje from which head coach Ronald Koeman must select a squad of 26 players for the upcoming World Cup. Koeman himself said on Monday evening on Rondo on Ziggo Sport that he has made a selection of up to 40 players and not 55 as had been mentioned earlier.

After the match PSV - FC Twente, Veerman told ESPN cameras that the national team coach no longer needs to call him either. For Ronald Koeman as well, the whole matter is over, the national team coach said on Monday evening in a video call with Rondo.

After Euro 2024, Veerman was no longer called up for the Netherlands national team, despite the fact that this season the midfielder was of great value for PSV and was also named Player of the Year by Voetbal International. Football icon and true Feyenoord man Willem van Hanegem also finds it incomprehensible that Veerman is not on the list to go to the World Cup.

This tells Van Hanegem in the podcast Willem & Wessel from VoetbalPrimeur. ''Joey Veerman is simply in that 55'', is the legend's opinion.

Next, the possible reasons are mentioned why the Volendammer would not stand a chance for a place in the World Cup squad, where the name of assistant coach Wim Jonk is mentioned a lot. Veerman and Jonk would not get along with each other because of the situation of Team Jonk at FC Volendam.

''You wouldn't do that, would you? If I were a coach and he (Jonk, Ed.) came up to me to say that, then I would have said: 'You just stay at home'. Then I would leave Jonk at home and bring Veerman into the first team. Of course'', Van Hanegem concludes.

ngl, the fullbacks looked way more confident going forward. Still, PSV need more control when the wingbacks vacate, otherwise it turns into chaos at the back.

Goal!! or nah, i just need the midfield to show for the ball quicker. When X gets half a second late, the whole structure collapses and the defense gets exposed. 🚀

"PSV Inside" talking about their tactical tweaks again, but i wanna see it under pressure. Against a compact block we need direct vertical passes, not endless recycling. If not, this becomes another possession-fest. 💀

Honestly, the way they mentioned the wing combinations is exactly why i keep trusting this system. If the timing is right, the overlaps create free shots instead of just crossing into traffic. Lets go, this can be peak PSV if we dont lose the ball in midfield 😍💯

Lmao the defensive line still plays like its allergic to stepping up. If they do not fix the offside trap, teams will keep walking through that space. 🔥

That line-up choice for the No. 9 better pay off, because if he drops too deep the space disappears. I want runs behind, not just link-up play. 🔥

Watched the way they set the tempo in the build-up, and it still worries me that the winger keeps drifting inside too early. When that happens, the fullback has no overlap and the chances turn into crosses from nothing. 🤦‍♂️

I dont get the substitution timing. Imo bringing that player on after the 70th minute killed momentum, and the last 15 was just hoping for counters 😂

Bro, that midfield balance is so risky. If the double pivot gets bypassed once, PSV just look stretched in transition. 👀

tbh i hope they dont overplay from the back when the opponents press with those high traps. Last time it felt like one bad touch and we were chasing shadows. 2-3 substitutions could fix it but still...

"PSV Inside" makes it sound like the plan is already perfect, but no, we need more control in the build-up. When the center backs spread wide, Zirkzee-like movement punishes us fast. I want the midfield to rotate quicker, otherwise its just vibes 🔥

If PSV go with that midfield balance again, im not convinced they can control second balls. Props though, because the pressing triggers look sharper when the fullbacks jump at the right time. 👀

If PSV bring that same intensity in midfield, Georgios better be ready to cover those half-spaces. Tbh im worried we leave the right side too open when the fullback steps up. Still, if Luuk keeps pressing like that its gonna be a problem for any team coming to Eindhoven 👀⚽

If PSV went with that press in the first half, you could see it immediately. The front line looked sharper, especially when they forced the early pass.
