Football icon clearly addresses the discussion around Guus Til: “Well, I wanted to stay a bit away from that.”
1 min readIn recent months, much has been said about the fact that Joey Veerman was not included in the Netherlands national team squad for the friendly internationals against Norway and Ecuador. Despite a strong season, the PSV midfielder is, to all likelihood, not going to receive an invitation from national coach Ronald Koeman for the World Cup.
Another name that in particular has been mentioned, especially since the injury of Xavi Simons, for a possible spot in the squad is Guus Til. The holding forward is also having a strong season and seems to have a good chance of making it into Koeman's squad.
Football legend Willem van Hanegem is fed up with the debate about which players should all be taken to the World Cup in North America next month. For the racially Feyenoord fan, it is also clear that Koeman should not call on midfielder Luciano Valente of Feyenoord.
After that, it is about the discussion surrounding Guus Til. ''Well, I wanted to stay away from that a bit, because after weeks of all that whining that Joey Veerman has to be in the squad from all kinds of angles, it is now a lot about Guus Til. He has to be included'', writes De Kromme in his column for Algemeen Dagblad.

For Van Hanegem, it all makes no difference. ''Well, I think it's fine, but I don't think that then all of a sudden we'll become world champions, right? And if he does go along with it, then it's also not for the future, in my opinion. That he doesn't complain if he doesn't play—I can hear that straight away too. But let's stop with that too for once, the striving for such a nice little group together,'' says the 1974 World Cup finalist firmly.
For De Kromme, it is more important that Koeman puts together the best possible squad. ''If you don't play, you can still walk into the dining hall once in a while with a bit less cheer? We are now creating something like a 'look at me, let's stay cheerful and train hard' bench. That is completely unnecessary. You just do your job there, that's enough,'' said Van Hanegem.
