ESPN analysts on PSV vs Twente: “This doesn’t all make sense anymore”

1 min read

Straight after the match between PSV and FC Twente, Joey Veerman appeared for ESPN’s cameras with a clear message for national team coach Ronald Koeman. The national team coach doesn’t need to call Veerman anymore for Oranje.

Last week, it became clear in fact that Veerman is not among the large squad of 55 players from which a final selection of 26 players must be made for the World Cup. ''If you keep coming with such press conferences and saying that my character is not right... At some point you’re just a bit done with it. It’s his choice who he calls up, but then say that you make other choices and don’t say that my character isn’t right,'' Veerman said to the cameras of ESPN.

ESPN analysts Arnold Bruggink and Kenneth Perez take up the cause for Veerman. Bruggink understands the frustrations of the midfielder and thinks it’s a good thing that Veerman made a statement by saying that the national team coach no longer needs to call him.

''That seems to me better. All of this no longer really makes much sense. Of course Veerman belongs in that selection of 55 men. If you look at Kees Smit and Luciano Valente, and they are perhaps in it, then Veerman belongs there too'', Bruggink said on Dit Was Het Weekend on ESPN.

Perez also understands little about the choice of national team coach Ronald Koeman not to put Veerman on the list of 55 players. ''It’s not just about football qualities. In that, Koeman makes a judgment. He may even be too honest. Veerman is as well and might therefore perhaps appreciate it, but it is never nice to be confronted about your character,'' said the Danish analyst.

"ready for the next step" ... sure, but prove it in games against the top 3. PSV can dominate possession and still look shaky in the counter, especially if the press starts 5 seconds too late 🔥

Hope they stick with that midfield balance, because when Sangare sits properly, PSV actually feel safe. If he goes missing, then it becomes chaos real quick, no cap. 💯

Wie speelt vandaag? i saw people hyping the front line, but if the false 9 movement is not timed, we just chase shadows. One good run from the striker and its a different story though. ⚽

De Ligt looked way more composed on the ball than i expected, that was a key difference. If he stays calm and wins those duels, PSV can build from the back much easier. 🚀

I actually like the idea of using Simons more centrally, but it depends on how far the wide players hold their width. If they tuck in too much, the central space gets crowded and we end up with no clear runners. Tbh, it will be a long night if transitions stay sloppy.

"Kansen gecreeerd" is nice, but i wanna see the quality. Too many chances were half-finished, lots of sideways passes in the box. That is how you end up praying for a goal instead of controlling the game. 🤬

tbh ive seen this same setup before... it only works if the fullbacks dont fly in too early. otherwise their runs get punished and the defense becomes 2 v 2 every time. 👀

I actually like the idea of rotating for the intensity, but the article makes it sound automatic. If the midfield balance slips when the tempo drops, we lose the cover for the fullbacks. IMO the key is who takes the first carry and who holds the line.

Omg the way they talk about switching play... if they do it one touch faster, we will bully teams on the wings. Right now its sometimes just a hopeful cross, no pattern. Need more overlap from the fullbacks, pls ❤️

🔥 Wijnaldum energy in those pressing moments. If PSV keeps that intensity, defenses wont even breathe. Lets gooo ⚽🚀

If the plan is to play out from the back but we keep giving away easy pressure triggers, thats gonna cost us. No fear attacking, but we need calmer first touches in midfield. Otherwise it turns into chaos again, and idk if the backline can survive that.

De Ligt signing or not, our line still needs more calm on the second ball. When the article says we are "ready to step up", i hope it means early traps, not letting attackers turn freely 👀.

If PSV want to press like the article says, they better keep the midfield distances right. When Luuk de Jong drops deep, the wingers have to trigger faster or we get stuck and it turns into a slow walk.

Eens. Sangare on the ball is fine, but i want him to protect the back line more consistently. That quote about "tempo" sounds good, but PSV always lose it for 10 seconds and then concede the pressure.

If this is the same midfield setup again, i fear we will be too flat in the build-up. Luuk de Jong pressing high can work, but only if the 8s actually run beyond the ball. Otherwise it turns into endless side passes...
