Does an Eredivisie goalkeeper apply to PSV?

Since the summer of 2024, Etienne Vaessen has been FC Groningen’s regular goalkeeper. That year, Vaessen came over from RKC Waalwijk and now the goalkeeper thinks he is ready to take a step up.

This lets the goalkeeper know during a conversation with Voetbal International. A role as second keeper is, for the time being, not something the goalkeeper is considering.

'Be the second goalkeeper at a top club? If I’m around 34 or 35, I would find that fun, yes. Right now I’m still at an age where I want to play everything. That was also an important reason to stay with FC Groningen, but in the end I do want to see whether my ceiling is higher. I think so, namely,' Vaessen says with conviction to VI.

The born Breda native thinks he is certainly suited for, among other things, PSV. ''I’m naturally a little Breda boy, but in all honesty I can say that I think I could play for a top club, yes. But it’s more important that the top clubs also think so,'' continues the goalkeeper.

Vaessen also received advice from coach Dick Lukkien. ''The coach has also sometimes said that I could do it, though he added that I have to be on it every day. I must admit I sometimes still have some trouble with that: there are days when I’m a bit out of sorts during the training sessions. So I can definitely still make a real step forward there, but in terms of keeping, I’m already at the top of the Netherlands. I can say that with confidence,'' concludes the goalkeeper.
