Former PSV player on Frenkie de Jong: “That says something about his character”

After a disappointing World Cup, Orange international Frenkie de Jong seems to have to miss the coming months at FC Barcelona due to a serious knee injury. This knee injury would only have been made worse by the fact that De Jong was simply active at the World Cup for the Netherlands national team.

Despite this, former PSV player and current ESPN analyst Danny Koevermans has every understanding for the fact that the midfielder simply played at the World Cup. Koevermans says this in the program WK Praat on ESPN.

''We look at the Argentines as a people who are willing to give everything for the country. De Jong has now also thought: 'it'll all work out; I’ll defend the colors and I’ll go play for Oranje''', begins the former striker.

Still, the current analyst understands the anger of the Catalan club. ''I can understand that Barcelona is incredibly pissed off about it. It says something about Frenkie's character. They knew it, but he still played,'' Koevermans continues.

At the Euro 2024, Frenkie de Jong was absent due to an injury. ''Maybe that made him think: 'just give me a shot, I want to play''', Hedwiges Maduro notes.

According to Koevermans, Dutch supporters should actually cherish a player like De Jong. ''He is often criticized, but the man has given everything for the Netherlands national team. We just need to be happy with a player like that. It’s nothing but complaining and complaining. He has now gambled and lost, but I think it’s good for it to reflect on him. We need to show him a bit more respect,'' said De Koef.
