Bosz is annoyed by the decision assistant coach: “He has a lot of knowledge about football.”
1 min readLast winter, Ibrahim Afellay was pushed forward by PSV as the new assistant coach to Peter Bosz, replacing Andre Ooijer. Last weekend, Afellay announced that he will stop again, and so PSV now has to look for a new assistant coach.
In NOS Studio Voetbal, Bosz goes deeper into the choice Afellay made. He came to see him after just two months to tell him that. Of course I knew about it, but I find it a shame. He said, as he has also made public, that he sees a different role for himself. I think it’s a shame, because he’s a great guy. He knows a lot about football. I think it’s a shame that he hasn’t given it time'', according to the coach.
In a press release on PSV’s website, the former midfielder stated the reason for his departure as Bosz’s assistant. ''The practice turned out to be different from what I had imagined. For example, I would have liked to lead more parts of training sessions and to be able to put more of my stamp on things. We differ in our views on that, and that is absolutely fine,'' Afellay said in that press release.
After that, Pierre van Hooijdonk also joins the discussion, and the former striker wonders whether they are talking with each other about the coaching profession. ''He is not an experienced coach. He then ends up standing on the pitch and experiences it differently afterwards. Once again, that is his feeling and he has every right to it. I genuinely find it a shame, but that’s just how it is,'' says Bosz.

Bosz also goes deeper into the role that Afellay had as his assistant. ''Ibi was responsible for the midfielders. He’s with all those players. This way, I give the other coaches responsibility for another line. He joined in the winter break, in a well-oiled machine. We’ve been working together for 2.5 years and we don’t really need to discuss much with each other, it just runs. Then I understand that it’s difficult,'' said the coach.

Garcia better start taking those early shots, because the last two matches we waited for the perfect moment and paid for it. One quick combo in the half-space and it is a different game 4-0 vibes 🚀
Wie kijkt mee? 👀😂 If we play like that, i want the whole crowd on edge from minute 1. That tempo is PSV energy, but it needs a clean sheet to back it up. ⚽🔥
Want to hear something funny, i swear every time we get a set piece, my heart jumps like its a goal fest. If the article is right about the new routines, that could be the difference-maker in tight games. ❤️⚽
Bro if the coach shifts the fullbacks higher again, we better have the cover sorted. That press looks amazing when it works, but transition defending is still shaky, ngl.
"PSV Inside" is spot on about the midfield spacing. When Veerman drops too deep, we lose the second ball and the transitions get ugly 💀
No way we are sacrificing the wide game just to play into the middle. I want more runs from the fullbacks, not more safe passes. Need this to be peak, not mid 🤡
"PSV Inside" makes it sound like everyone is fully locked in on tactics, but i still think our transition defending is the weak spot. When we lose the ball, it becomes a scramble too often. 💀
If PSV go back to that slow build-up, opponents will just press Ismael's side every time. Still, that first touch from Luuk is looking sharp again 🔥🐐
Ngl, if PSV play like they did in the last two minutes, thats on the midfield again. We need better ball retention between the lines, otherwise it feels like we are always one counter away from trouble. Still, Veerman looked dangerous when he could turn.
Where is the real control when we are up? I wanna see us manage the game, not just chase the next attack.
If PSV are really aiming for that faster buildup through the half-spaces, it will depend on our 8 moving early. Otherwise we just end up recycling possession and looking predictable in the final third. 👀
Maximising the wing buildup is nice, but tbh the finishing has to match the chances. The article hints at more intensity, now we need the end product at the same level. Otherwise it feels like good football with no goals.
If PSV is actually pressing like that in midfield, i love it. But if they keep giving the half spaces to the runner behind, we will get punished fast. That is where im worried.
tbh i like how PSV pressing looks this season, but if they sit too high against quick wingers, it gets punished fast. i would rather see more cover for the fullbacks than more risky stepping up.
