1 min readLiteral and figurative character assassination. That conclusion can be drawn from Joey Veerman’s statements about national team coach Ronald Koeman, who is increasingly receiving criticism for his communication skills.
Veerman is certainly done with it by now because Ronald Koeman no longer needs to be called. The midfielder was not part of the preliminary squad of Oranje for the 2026 World Cup and has no need for a meeting with the national coach. 'I’m starting to get mildly annoyed with those press conferences every time,' Veerman hits back.
The thoughts go back to the summer of 2024. Koeman took Veerman along to the 2024 European Championship, but since then has not called up the Volendam native to the squad. 'I think I was the only one in the Netherlands who had expected it,' Veerman said about missing out on the squad with its 55 heads.
'When you come up with press conferences every time and say that my character isn’t good... At some point you’re a bit done with that. It’s his choice who he calls, but then say that you make other choices and not that my character isn’t good.'
Veerman emphasized at the Euros that he played no negative role and wants nothing to do with or hear anything about his character. 'I haven't done anything wrong, and after that I wasn't there for two years. I'm now slightly irritated by those press conferences every time. He doesn't need to call me anymore, no. If something had happened, I would have said so, I would have come clean about it, but I don't have any idea. If you don't want to call me up based on my qualities: fine, doesn't matter. But not because of my character.'
'But this World Cup isn't about me, you're called up or not. Everyone wants the best for their country, I wanted that too, but it doesn't happen', Veerman said after his substitute appearance in the won home match against FC Twente. 'Am I going to watch? Yes, absolutely. I have a good rapport with the boys, so of course I'm going to watch and cheer them on.'

"Kovar is geen PSV-niveau, verkopen die man" snap ik nu echt. Het huurverhaal en die koopoptie doen er dan ineens niet meer toe, als je onder de lat telkens weer risico geeft.
"Kovar is geen PSV-niveau, verkopen die man"... daar sta ik dus middenin. Je kan niet elke wedstrijd rekenen op geluk en reddingen. 6 schoten op doel en dan nog zo'n knullige doorlip, nee gewoon.
Iets zegt me dat dit meer psychologisch is dan puur techniek. Als je vijf miljoen (en dan nog op huurbasis met koopoptie) haalt, verwacht je stabiliteit, niet "knap keepen maar dan één keer de mist in".
i snap de kritiek tbh. Vijf miljoen voor iemand die in zijn eerste eredivisie-jaar al dit soort fouten maakt... dat moet toch structureel minder. 👀

tbh 6 schoten op doel en 1 goal zegt genoeg. Hij hield er wel wat ballen uit maar die fout bij de 1-1 is echt weer hetzelfde liedje... 😅
Cijfermatig prima wedstrijd, maar die 1-1 blunder blijft hangen. Kovar pakt ballen, ja, maar als hij weer zo positionering mist dan is dat PSV onwaardig. 🔥

5 miljoen en dan dit... tbh dan snap ik de frustratie echt. Ja, hij pakt wel ballen, maar PSV is nu eenmaal een club die fouten moet straffen, niet accepteren. Olij had die situatie gewoon beter gelezen.
