A new national team coach after World Cup exit
1 min readAll PSV players who were active at the World Cup have now been eliminated. Last Tuesday night, Sergino Dest and Ricardo Pepi with Team USA ultimately lost to Belgium 1-4, and as a result there are no PSV players left active at the World Cup.
Last week Ivan Perisic was already eliminated with Croatia in the round of 16 by Portugal. Despite a goal by Perisic, the Croats lost 2-1 after a tumultuous final phase.
The Balkan country seemed to be on track to make it 2-2 via Josko Gvardiol, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR intervention for offside. A sensor in the ball would have indicated that, as substitute Igor Matanović had touched the ball, there was offside.
The defeat of the Croats is enough reason for national team coach Zlatko Dalic to stop as national team coach. This has now been made public by the Croatian Football Federation.
Dalic was appointed as national team coach in 2017 and managed to impress with Croatia especially at the 2018 World Cup and the 2022 World Cup. In 2018, they reached the final in which they lost 4-2 to France, and in 2022, the semifinal was the end of the road (3-0 against Argentina).
However, at the European Championship, they performed less well under Dalic. At the European Championship in 2021, the Balkan country did not get past the round of 16 after a defeat against Spain (3-5) and in 2024 the Croats did not survive the group stage.

"Dalic werd in 2017 aangesteld als bondscoach" en klaar blijkbaar. Ik vind het wel een beetje hard, fr, want met 2-2 in zicht na die check had Kroatië ook ineens kunnen kantelen. Al blijf je uiteindelijk verantwoordelijk voor de resultaten, ngl. ⚽
Zlatko Dalic stoppen na die tumultueuze slotfase is begrijpelijk, maar tbh het probleem lijkt telkens hetzelfde: momentencontrole. Kroatië kan in toernooien pieken, maar tijdens EK's missen ze net de consistentie.
Zlatko Dalic stoppen na een 2-1 verlies... tja, voetbal is genadeloos. Maar die cijfers op EK 2021 (8e finales) en 2024 (poule niet overleefd) laten wel zien dat er een dip zat. 👀
Tbh snap ik Dalic z'n kant niet eens helemaal. Kroatië had onder hem 2018 en 2022 wel piek, maar op het EK en nu dit debacle komt hij alsnog hard op straat. Toch die VAR-smurrie hielp ook niet, maar na 16 jaar op hoog niveau voelt dit als more than one match.
"sensor in de bal" lol wat is dit, FIFA 99? 😂 Ook zuur voor Perisic hoor, hij scoorde nog en ze gingen toch 2-1 onderuit.
Idk, Kroatië had kansen om dat gelijk te trekken en dan verlies je door zo'n detail. 2018 en 2022 waren top onder Dalic, maar op EK 2021 en EK 2024 ziet het er gewoon te wisselvallig uit.
De VAR op die Gvardiol-goal klinkt echt absurd. Als die sensor en dat aanraken door Matanović echt buitenspel was, oké, maar wauw... dat is wel zo'n beslissing die een hele wedstrijd kapotmaakt.
Dest en Pepi eruit, jammer. Maar het is echt een wake-up call voor PSV als je ziet hoe snel je in zo'n toernooi kunt wegvallen. Toch benieuwd wat ze mee terugnemen richting Eredivisie.
Die VAR-situatie met Gvardiol en buitenspel klinkt echt krankzinnig, die bal-aankoop via Matanović en die sensor... bruh. Dalic die daarna stopt voelt meer als hoofdreactie dan als evaluatie van het hele toernooi.
Tja Dest en Pepi allebei eruit na 1-4... toch pijnlijk als PSV'ers ineens geen wedstrijden meer hebben. Alleen jammer dat het nieuws nu ook meteen door de tactiek-wereld gaat rollen.
