Analysts point to Joey Veerman: “Shouldn’t you be looking forward to it?”
1 min readBefore the World Cup, it became clear that despite a strong season at PSV, Joey Veerman did not need to count on a call-up from Ronald Koeman for a place in the Netherlands national team’s World Cup squad. Moreover, after the last league match against FC Twente, Veerman himself said that Koeman no longer needed to call him.
Now Koeman has stepped down as national team coach, the KNVB must look for a new candidate. This could also create a new opportunity for the midfielder in the Dutch national team.
Besides the name of Arne Slot, Pep Guardiola is often put forward as the ideal national team coach for the Netherlands. Also on the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp, the name of Guardiola is mentioned.
In that regard, the writer and presenter of the podcast Michel van Egmond points to Joey Veerman. ''Wouldn't you be looking forward to the prospect of the image of Pep Guardiola having to call Volendam to ask if Joey Veerman would please go back to playing in midfield? That kind of thing is what we're going to experience, haha. That's reality. Pep thinks he’s going to find Xavi- and Iniesta-like types, but he’ll have to be happy if Joey wants to start playing football again'', says Van Egmond with a laugh.

René van der Gijp also suspects that Guardiola will not become the Spain national coach, since the former footballer sees himself as a Catalan. ''I think you’re probably right about that,'' thinks Van Egmond, after which Rob Jansen says: ''That could very well be the case; he is really a Catalan.''

"Zouden jullie je niet verheugen?" Ik reageer meteen met ja, liefst met een oproep naar Joey die eindelijk vertrouwen krijgt. 🔥💯
That joke about Guardiola calling Volendam is funny, but I want the serious version. Give Joey a role where he can get on the ball between lines, then lets see that "Xavi- and Iniesta-like" comparison become reality 🔥⚽
idk jongens, Veerman had toch al z'n kans bij het NL elftal niet zo lang geleden? Als Koeman stopt dan kan het ineens wel, maar imo moet hij vooral weer 90 minuten consistent spelen. Anders is het vooral hype.
If Koeman is gone, great, but the real question is whether the KNVB brings a coach who trusts a PSV-style midfielder. Veerman should start because he reads the game well, but under a chaotic midfield setup he will look average.
"Koeman no longer needed to call him" is a wild line tbh. I think Joey is exactly the type Guardiola likes, but he needs clear minutes and a system where he can control tempo, not just be a bench option.
Joey Veerman not getting the call, then Koeman stepping down, feels like perfect timing for a PSV guy to get a proper new chance. If Pep ever had to ring Volendam for him, that would be peak Dutch football drama lol 🤡
