Henk ten Cate is open to a move to PSV after “wrong perceptions”
1 min readHow come football-loving Netherlands has for several years now essentially had enough of Memphis Depay? And even the vast majority of PSV fans can by no means be called fans of Memphis anymore.
The reasons for that are generally fairly obvious. Let’s, however, keep it to his footballing qualities. It doesn’t come out enough; Memphis is injured too often, but he also rarely, if ever, shows in his attitude that he really wants or is able to make the difference. Often, Memphis plays in a way as if he keeps wanting to show, again and again, “look at me, look at me—am I a special footballer.”
At the European Championship in Germany, the former PSV player lost the ball throughout the tournament, but he simply stayed put, as Ronald Koeman. Seasoned veteran and experienced Henk ten Cate can well imagine it all, because Ten Cate still seems to be a fan of Memphis. Ten Cate therefore does not think that the new national team coach needs to sweep through the Oranje squad. The former coach believes that a seasoned pro like Memphis Depay is being dismissed too easily and is getting too much criticism.
'I can't see why you should start replacing players now. Absolutely not. This is simply a perfectly good group of players', Ten Cate says in a round of questions for VI. 'After a disappointing tournament, there's no need to immediately sweep things through with the broom. That's easy talk, from a distance. Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer the Cristiano from ten years ago. But he is still important for Portugal.'

'Messi is the same story with Argentina. We have to be careful not to write people off as quickly. Just call me better players than the guys who were in the Netherlands squad at this World Cup. I still don’t see any better center back than Van Dijk.'
Ten Cate also thinks that all-time top scorer Memphis could still play a role in Oranje. 'We haven't seen much of Memphis in this tournament, but with his 32 years, he should still be able to keep going for a bit. Though I wonder whether he actually gets much better from the Brazilian league.'
'When Memphis comes back to the Netherlands to play football again, he may pick up his old level once more. The level at which he meant an enormous amount to Oranje. Maybe that's an idea for him. He is one of the experienced players who is too easily dismissed. That's what I take issue with,' Ten Cate said, which seems to refer to a transfer to PSV.
Meanwhile, Hugo Borst is indeed finished with the Netherlands national team and the players of the Netherlands national team. From a special statistic that has been made public, it appears that the player of the Netherlands national team has covered the fewest meters at the recent World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Hugo Borst therefore goes in hard in the video below.

"PSV Inside" is basically my weekly panic button lol. The line about improving transition defending is correct, because the last match we looked a bit flat once the ball was lost. Still, im expecting a big response next round. 🚀
Interesting read about the game plan. I like the idea of creating overloads, but defensively we need more second-man runs on counters, otherwise our 1-2 passes wont matter. imo Bergwijn is key to keep the threat moving forward. 👏
Bro, the biggest thing for me is the fullbacks. If they dont step up, our wingers get isolated and the whole buildup stalls. If the quote is true about being brave, then show it in the first 20 minutes. 🔥
That line about the pressing triggers is spot on. 🔥 We press better when the opponent plays back into the CBs, then it becomes a win of second balls and PSV can go.
Tbh the article is right about the tempo. When PSV play quicker, the chances come, but when they slow down they invite pressure and it turns into a struggle to break lines. Need more direct runners, not just possession.
That PSV midfield press sounds good on paper... but if it leaves space behind, opponents will run at Tillman and turn it into a highlight reel. 💀
The mention of the double pivot is interesting, but i think it only works if the FBs push high. Otherwise we end up flat and the midfield gets crowded, fr.
If PSV go with this structure, i really hope they keep the ball through the halfspaces and not just recycle in front of the press. Sangare has to be the calm one, otherwise it turns into chaos fast. 👀
If PSV really want to build through the half-spaces, they have to be braver with the first pass. Right now it feels like we recycle it too safe and the press just resets.
