Veerman hopes for a new chance in the Netherlands national team: 'Always very nice'

No one will have missed that Joey Veerman, despite a strong 2025/2026 with PSV, was not considered by former national team coach Ronald Koeman for a place in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup. Veerman also said that he no longer needed to be called by Koeman, who has meanwhile stepped down as national team coach.

In conversation with ESPN, the PSV player discusses his possible return to the Oranje team now that the KNVB has to look for a new national team coach. ''Do you see a new opportunity for yourself with the Netherlands national team?'', asks Sanne van Dongen, an ESPN reporter, the midfielder.

''It depends on who the national team coach becomes. I hope it will be, yes,'' Veerman answers honestly.

After that, Van Dongen asks whether it is also a goal for the PSV player to return to the Netherlands national team. ''Playing for the Netherlands national team is of course always very nice, so I do think that when I reach my level again, I should be allowed to come back there once more,'' says the midfielder.

''Then you have to score a lot and get assists for PSV'', says Van Dongen, after which Veerman replies with a laugh: ''That happens, I think, every year, so I'll do my best for that.''

After the Euro 2024 in Germany, where Oranje were eliminated in the semi-final by England, Veerman was no longer called up by Ronald Koeman. According to the former national team coach in the meantime, the character of the PSV player was also different and, partly because of that, the midfielder was not eligible for a spot in the World Cup squad of the Netherlands national team.

After PSV - FC Twente (5-1) on 17 May 2025, Veerman told the cameras of ESPN that Koeman no longer needed to call him and that he was also done with it. This statement earned Veerman both support and criticism from various journalists and analysts.
