Valentine Driesen points to Jerdy Schouten
1 min readSince the summer of 2023, Jerdy Schouten has been a player for PSV and last season Schouten was appointed the new captain after Luuk de Jong left for FC Porto. In addition, last season the midfielder was deployed as a central defender after a change by coach Peter Bosz in order to play more football from the back.
This choice by Bosz paid off well, since the team began to turn things around at that moment and ultimately left with the whistle, heading toward the third consecutive national championship. Nevertheless, the decision to place Schouten in defense is nothing new.
This is what Valentijn Driessen says in the De Telegraaf podcast Kick-off when a possible role as national team coach for Bosz is discussed. ''A fairly large number of players have already worked with him and already know what that football of Bosz looks like. It also fits in with Dutch football culture. And it’s also not the case that he does whole bizarre things that they’ve never come across in their careers. Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt worked with him at Ajax and a number have worked with him at PSV in recent years. It’s also not the case that it’s something brand new for everyone,'' says PSV watcher Jeroen Kapteijns in that same podcast.
''And his style of play is also absolutely nothing new. Jerdy Schouten in the back, that was Oranje in 1974 already. Back then it was Arie Haan'', says Driessen in response.
After that, the journalist continues his story, also claiming that Bosz is a coach who would dare to make such a decision. ''And later with Frank Rijkaard and Ronald Koeman himself. It is not at all new. It is presented as if it were very new, but it isn’t. The only thing is: he dares it. He dares it in a time when most coaches are anxious about attacking, because they are afraid of the counter. And at the Netherlands team he has better players than he has at PSV'', said Driessen.

Ik snap de kern: geen compleet nieuwe gok, alleen andere durf. Kapteijns zegt het goed, spelers hebben Bosz al in hun benen gehad. Hopelijk kiest Bosz vaker voor aanvallen en niet voor "veilig achterin", want dan is Schouten toch weer een wissel op spel.
tbh mooi verhaal, maar Driessen zit ook een beetje te verkopen. Coachcap erbij doen is leuk, maar Oranje 1974 had andere spelers en context. Bij ons hangt het plan teveel aan automatisme, en dat duurt soms. 💀
"Het sluit ook aan op de Nederlandse voetbalcultuur" yes, maar ik vind wel dat de tegenpartij steeds scherper countert. Als we aanvallend willen blijven, dan moet Schouten achterin net zo veel voetballend durven als de heren van 1974. Hopelijk geen toevalstreffer, maar een plan. 🚀
"Jerdy Schouten achterin, dat deed Oranje in 1974 al." oké historisch, maar PSV is geen oefenpot van toen. Ik vraag me af of we echt altijd defensieve stabiliteit houden, zeker tegen snelle wingers. Smh.
Kapteijns zegt dat het niet nieuw is, maar die vergelijking met Bosz bij Ajax voelt wel een beetje like marketing. Bij PSV hebben we momenteel spelers die beter zijn in andere fases, dus ik hoop dat Bosz het lef ook koppelt aan juiste aanpassingen. 🔥
Bosz die "dúrf t" klinkt altijd goed, maar ik wil ook zien dat we controle houden tegen tegenstanders die ons laten counteren. Als Schouten in de as staat, dan moeten de backs en de 6 super strak bewegen anders wordt het chaos. 💀
Tbh ik vind het nog steeds een beetje riskant. Je kan het retro-verhalen noemen, maar als de pressing niet goed staat ben je als verdediger ineens aan het improviseren. En dan loopt je opbouw ook sneller vast.
"Jerdy Schouten achterin, dat deed Oranje in 1974 al" klinkt leuk, maar het draait om uitvoering. In PSV moet hij dan ook consistent zijn in duelsterkte en timing, anders is het meteen secondes kwetsbaar achterin.
Schouten achterin is echt zo'n Bosz-wereld, maar wel eentje die al veel langer in het Nederlandse voetbal zit. 👀 Vraag is alleen of we het dit seizoen net zo makkelijk blijven opbouwen zonder dat het tegen een snelle ploeg meteen pijn doet.
Bosz die "dunft" vind ik de juiste vibe, maar bij PSV moet je wel profielen hebben die 1-1 verdedigend kunnen schakelen. Schouten als CV kan goated zijn als de opbouw klopt. Als de druk verkeerd loopt, sta je meteen kwetsbaar. 👀
Jerdy achterin was al "Oranje-in-1974" maar ik vond het altijd riskant. Als Bosz durft tegen die counter, dan snap ik het wel. Maar je ziet ook dat je balverlies niet mag verstoppen. 🔥
