A future or not at PSV? Former PSV player passes harsh judgment on hype around Kees Smit: “Come on, really”

We can certainly say that over the past season a major hype has been created around AZ talent Kees Smit. Smit, according to some football fans, is worth at least sixty million euros and is already ready for a move to Real Madrid.

Former PSV player and current analyst Wim Kieft believes that Dutch football media and part of the analysts’ world have played a deplorable role in the hype surrounding the talent of Alkmaar Zaanstreek. Kieft says this in the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp.

''But boys, do you know what we created three months ago with that Kees Smit. Come on, he’s just going to show up with his football bag at AZ. There were stories about Real Madrid, Barcelona, the Netherlands national team. It’s been normalized again. That has to make some people think,'' says the former PSV player emphatically.

In addition, the former striker believes that those who have spread the transfer rumours of the midfielder should think it over themselves. ''What a hype has been made of it. And everyone just goes along with it and everyone just thinks you have to talk along, because otherwise you’ve got it wrong. Nonsense, right? That kid can’t help it. He didn’t create that hype'', Kieft said.

Yet Rob Jansen believes that Smit himself could also have done something about this. ''He should have issued a statement. Stop with those nonsense stories. A top athlete is always older than someone else in society. He can tell a club that he no longer wants to hear those stories. You have to stop the core of it, not the journalist'', Jansen concludes.
