Update towards Johan Cruyff Shield: “Actually, I’m still rehabilitating.”
1 min readAfter more than ten months of injury troubles, Ruben van Bommel last Saturday made his first unofficial minutes in the PSV kit. In the friendly match against Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, Van Bommel played for more than half an hour, with PSV ultimately winning 7-3.
Last summer, the left winger came over from AZ for more than €15 million and managed to impress early in the season until disaster struck in the home match against Ajax (2-2) on 21 September 2025. Since then, Van Bommel has been sidelined for the entire season.
In conversation with the Eindhovens Dagblad, the wing forward talks about his comeback. ''This was an important moment, but I can name one more'', starts Van Bommel.
On Sunday, August 2, PSV kicks off the new football season at home in the contest for the Johan Cruijff Shield against the Cup winner AZ, the old club of Van Bommel, and the winger hopes to be able to make that match. ''I hope that in two weeks I can be there and be fit'', PSV's player says about it.
Despite his first minutes since last September, the recovery of the winger is not yet fully complete. ''Actually, I'm still in the middle of rehabilitation. During a period like this, it doesn't go up in a straight line for nine months, as you would like. You're not suddenly back after an injury and you can't play ninety minutes. At the moment, I'm exactly as fit as I was before my injury,'' said Van Bommel.

He joining the team slowly is the right call, but i hate that he was injured right after that 2-2 vs Ajax. €15m summer signing, now the question is whether he can hit form fast enough for the Johan Cruijff Schaal, not just be back on the pitch.
"Ik hoop dat ik er over twee weken bij kan zijn" ... dat is precies het soort statement waardoor iedereen spanning krijgt lol. Hopelijk betekent dat niet dat we straks weer een stap terug zien.
"Eigenlijk ben ik nog steeds aan het revalideren"... that line is so honest. Over twee weken vs AZ is huge, but if he cannot do 90 yet, i would rather see him 60 max and protect the comeback 🔥⚽
First half hour and 7-3 already, but i get why Van Bommel is still cautious. If he says he is still revalidering, imo we should not rush Johan Cruijff Schaal... better him fresh for the start.
7-3 is leuk, maar laten we niet doen alsof het tegen Union betekent dat alles klaar is. Als hij nog "precies even zwaar" is als voor z'n blessure, dan is het herstel dus nog vooral conditioneel maatwerk.
tbh ik snap zijn risico-management, maar PSV kan niet blijven wachten op z'n vleugel. Als hij 0-90 nog niet haalt, dan moet er gewoon een plan B klaarstaan, want AZ gaat druk zetten.
Die zin "Eigenlijk ben ik nog steeds aan het revalideren" is wel eerlijk, maar ook frustrerend. Als hij over twee weken fit moet zijn voor de Cruijff Schaal, dan is dat echt mikken op piekmoment.
Brutale pech hoor, 10+ maanden is echt geen toeval. Maar 7-3 en dan ruim een half uur, daar zit toch weer hoop in 😍⚽
