Support for Veerman after an ad by G-Star: 'Rightfully so'

Last weekend, PSV midfielder Joey Veerman caused some stir by appearing in an advertisement in De Telegraaf. Veerman appeared in an advertisement for the clothing brand G-Star, where it looked as if the midfielder was delivering a jab at national team coach Ronald Koeman.

The clothing brand had published a photo of the PSV player in the newspaper with the text 'Denim with real character' and in doing so it seemed to indicate that the brand was referring to Koeman's earlier remarks. The national coach had said in a press conference in March that Veerman's character would be different.

This was for the PSV supporter a reason to indicate, after the match PSV - FC Twente (5-1) on 17 May of this month, in front of the cameras of ESPN, that he no longer needs to be called by the national team coach. "If you come with press conferences like that and say that my character isn’t right, then at some point I’m done with it," Veerman said at the time.

According to journalist Rutger Castricum, it is right that the PSV midfielder backs off towards the national coach. Despite his strong season at PSV, Veerman has not been considered for a place in the World Cup squad, and that also applied to, among others, Feyenoord player Luciano Valente and AZ's Kees Smit.

According to Castricum, Koeman has invoked this soap about himself by naming the character of Veerman and not providing any clarity about it. ''It’s a jab, but very funny and justified. Koeman has let him dangle a bit. He started talking about his character without clearly saying what it was, which makes everyone start speculating'', the journalist tells De Oranjezomer on SBS6.

The national coach, according to him, also acted wrongly. ''It's so stupid of Koeman to present it that way at the press conference? You damage a young guy like that too. I think that's dumb'', Castricum said.
