Andy van der Meijde points to former PSV player after Oranje equalizer: “This can’t be.”

It will not have escaped anyone in the Netherlands that the Netherlands national team against Japan on Sunday evening in the 88th minute ended up drawing against a draw in the first match of the 2026 World Cup. Both Japanese goals were scored quite easily, and this was also noticed by former footballer Andy van der Meijde.

In the 1-1 draw against Japan, Van der Meijde also felt that the Japanese were given too much space by Oranje to be able to play freely. ''I’m saying, though: you have to sit closer together'', the former international shouted during the match on his own YouTube channel Kijken with Andy.

Van der Meijde watched the match together with Glenn Helder and Leo Koswal. In particular, the defensive organization of the Netherlands national team could count on substantial criticism after the 1-1.

''They're waiting. What the fuck do you want? They're waiting and doing nothing. He's totally free and can shoot. Jesus, get closer to them, man!'', Van der Meijde snaps, with former PSV player Denzel Dumfries taking the flak.

According to former footballer, when defending against the equalizer Dumfries did not show himself from his best side. ''Dumfries really has to stay much shorter. This can't be'', said the ex-footballer.
