Valentijn Driessen criticizes comparison of Orange player with former PSV man: “Will that never happen”
1 min readCrysencio Summerville may have been one of the biggest surprises in the Netherlands national team's World Cup squad. Summerville, this season at least, made a good impression with West Ham United, with whom the winger was relegated out of the Premier League.
In the match Netherlands - Japan, Summerville scored the 2-1 and seemed on track to become the match winner. In minute 88, however, Oranje conceded the equalizer and thereby slipped the victory out of the hands of Ronald Koeman’s side.
In foreign media, the current Orange international was compared to former PSV player Arjen Robben. Robben was active in three World Cups for the Netherlands and in 2014 the former forward perhaps had the best tournament of his life.
According to Valentijn Driessen, the comparison between Summerville and Robben makes no sense. ''When we talk about foreign media, I completely understand that it all has to score. I did find him likable, but it’s not a good comparison. Summerville, throughout his entire body, still hasn’t had what Robben had in his left toe. In 2014, Robben was the best player in the world. Summerville will never become that'', says Driessen in the podcast Kick-off of De Telegraaf.

Fellow journalist Mike Verweij also thinks the comparison between Robben and Summerville is a bit too much. “Summerville is only 24 and has taken a huge detour, via Leeds United to West Ham. Give the lad some time too,” Verweij said.
In addition, Driessen also notes that Summerville had it tough in his youth years as a footballer. ''He was in the youth ranks at Feyenoord, then to Dordrecht and ADO Den Haag. ''How he experiences football now, how he deals with things everywhere, and how self-assured he is—that was of course not the case back then. When you talk to people at Feyenoord, they all say it was a super talent. But at the same time, back then he was also unmanageable. I think that now, precisely, he is very manageable for the trainers'', concludes the journalist.

"Summerville gaat dat nooit worden" klinkt te definitief, ngl. Die vergelijking met Robben is ook gewoon clickbait van buitenlandse media. Geef die jongen gewoon tijd, zoals Verweij zegt, en hij kan groeien.
Driessen is wel lekker hard hoor... maar tbh heeft ie niet helemaal ongelijk. Summerville scoorde tegen Japan, maar Robben peak was echt iets anders. 2014 Robben was wereldklasse, Summerville is nog in ontwikkeling.
