PSV player gears up for World Cup debut

1 min read

On early Wednesday morning Dutch time, Austria faces PSV'er Paul Wanner in the squad in the first match at the 2026 World Cup. With that, the Austrians make their return after 28 years to the top global football tournament.

Austria managed to qualify by drawing 1-1 at home in the final qualifying match on 18 November last year against Bosnia and Herzegovina of PSV player Esmir Bajraktarevic. The Alpine country opens the World Cup in Group J with a match against World Cup debutant Jordan.

In addition to the Asian country, Wanner & co. during the group stage also play against the reigning world champions Argentina and against Algeria. Wanner indeed progressed through Germany’s youth teams, but despite this made the choice for Austria and therefore now makes his World Cup debut.
