PSV warns Oranje: “Given the circumstances, it could get tough at the World Cup.”
1 min readFor the Dutch national team too, this week the FIFA World Cup begins in North America. Orange will play its group matches in the United States and in three different cities.
The Netherlands plays in Dallas (Texas) against Japan, in Houston (also Texas) against Sweden and in Kansas City (Missouri) against Tunisia. According to PSV player Sergino Dest, these cities are not ideal for the Netherlands national team because of the high temperatures in the summer months.
This tells the wing defender of PSV in conversation with De Telegraaf. ''In terms of the circumstances, it can get tough at the World Cup. We play Team USA in Los Angeles. There, the temperature is a bit better. In cities like Dallas and Houston, it's harder in the middle of summer. That's usually much warmer,'' begins the American international.
Dest also plays in the city of Seattle on the west coast of the United States, in addition to Los Angeles. There, it is usually better to spend the time during the summer than in the inland of the USA.
Just as during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, stadiums will also be equipped with air conditioning, but the American defender doubts whether this will actually help against the heat. ''They do have covered stadiums, but does that really help? I’ve played there myself in this time of year and it’s really hot there,'' Dest concludes.

Dest zegt basically dat airco in stadions niet mag onderschat worden, maar ook dat het alsnog bloedheet is. Denk dat Japan en Zweden juist slimmer kunnen omgaan met tempo en ritme.
Dest is wel realistisch hoor. Dallas en Houston in de zomer zijn normaal gesproken echt ovensteden, zeker als je nog een poule met Japan en Zweden hebt die vaak hoog tempo spelen. Hoop dat Oranje in de wedstrijdplanning niet te veel verbrandt.
Tbh i hoop dat Van Gaal/Koeman straks niet alleen op pressing gaat sturen. Als je meteen kapot loopt door die hitte, dan win je tactisch niks meer.
Dallas en Houston in de zomer is echt vragen om problemen. Als Dest dit al "pittig" noemt, dan is het vooral op conditie en herstel dat Nederland punten kan laten liggen.
tbh dit soort hitte maakt wel echt verschil in intensiteit. Als Dest gelijk heeft en airco in stadions is minder dan je denkt, dan kan Nederland fysiek gewoon achterlopen.
