Analysts point to PSV player: “I’d consider it incredibly impressive”

According to former PSV players Wim Kieft and René van der Gijp, Ruben van Bommel can, in the 2026/2027 season, grow into an important player for Peter Bosz's team. The analysts say so in the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp.

Van Bommel made an excellent impression last season at PSV until disaster struck on 21 September 2025 in the home match against Ajax (2-2), and the winger suffered a serious injury that kept him sidelined for the rest of the season. According to Kieft, however, a lot of pressure also comes to rest on the shoulders of the winger.

In addition, the born Amsterdammer also points to Feyenoord player Shaqueel van Persie, the son of Robin van Persie. ''There is certainly pressure on those guys, of course. I would find it really impressive. Besides that, Van Bommel comes out with that injury. With Van Persie's son, the bar is also quite high, naturally. At one point he did some pretty nice things. The crowd expects a lot because of the Van Persie name. I would find it great if he makes it happen,'' Kieft says.

Van der Gijp also has high expectations of Van Persie, and Ricardo Pepi is also mentioned in that context. ''It’s pretty impressive when someone can just score an easy goal. Van Persie can do that. You’d think the same of Ricardo Pepi, wouldn’t you,'' says Gijp to Kieft.

Last weekend, Van Bommel made his return in the PSV kit after more than ten months of injury trouble during the friendly match against Union Saint-Gilliose (7-3). That is something Kieft hasn’t missed either.

The former striker also finds it incredibly upsetting that the PSV player was kept out for the entire season last season due to his injury against Ajax. ''I thought it was so terrible. That kid has something, that Ruben van Bommel. It’s so sad that that boy suffered that injury. Really awful'', concludes the former international.
