PSV duo working on recovery in Under 19

1 min read

The 2025/2026 season was hardly the season for newcomers Alassane Plea and Ruben van Bommel. Both attackers made an excellent impression at the start of the season, but at the same time, misfortune struck for both of them early on.

This is how Plea was seriously injured in the second league match on the road against FC Twente (0-2) after a tackle by defender Robin Pröpper. Since then, the Frenchman has been ruled out, and despite rumors circulating about a possible return in the season’s final match, it did not happen for the striker.

Van Bommel came last summer for more than fifteen million euros over from AZ and the winger had a good start until, in the home match against Ajax (2-2) in matchday 6, just before halftime he suffered a serious injury that cost him the rest of the season. Last month, the wide attacker was back on the training field when Peter Bosz's squad held an open training session at the Philips Stadium.

Both strikers are now fully focused on the 2026/2027 season, in which they of course hope to be able to play an important role in the hunt for the fourth consecutive league title. Last week, the strikers trained with the Under 19 and both made a good impression.

So Van Bommel was good for a strike with his left leg during a small-sided game, and Plea was good for an assist. On Instagram, in any case, people are responding to the post with a lot of positivity, where Van Bommel and Plea are seen training with PSV’s Under 19s.

If theyre both back now, i expect them to be heavily monitored, especially after that Pröpper tackle and the Ajax injury. Next season they can be key in the fourth title run, but only if the setbacks are truly behind them.

"beide maakten een goede indruk" ok fine 👀 now show it in Eredivisie too. U19 highlights are cool but title hunt needs goals against real teams, not only in partijvorm.

Lucasfield? no, left foot goal for Ruben in a small-sided game... ill take it 😂 but still, game intensity is different. I just wanna see them survive 90 minutes first, then we can talk about title chances.

If the goal is title number 4 in a row, PSV must manage risk carefully. Van Bommel for 15+ million and Plea with that long layoff is wasted potential unless their minutes are built up properly. Good that they trained with the Onder 19, but one session proves nothing. 👀

Honestly the timing is interesting. Ajax game, injury before halftime, then suddenly training with U19, it feels like they are targeting 2026/2027 from day one. Just dont let them become 'training players' again, we need them match-fit.

Plea getting ruled out again after that Twente tackle is so brutal... But training with the Onder 19 and still producing (assist) means he is at least mentally and physically moving forward. When is he expected to rejoin the first team?

If theyre back training with the U19 already, that is a good sign. Plea with an assist and Van Bommel scoring with his left foot is exactly what we want to hear. Hopefully they both get eased back without rushing it.

Lets see of they can stay fit dit seizoen.
