Maurice Steijn praises former PSV player: ‘Wonderful’

Denzel Dumfries has secured his dream transfer from Internazionale to Real Madrid. This can count on praise from former Sparta coach Maurice Steijn.

Dumfries has played for Internazionale since 2021, having taken him over that summer from PSV. PSV acquired the wing-back in 2018 from sc Heerenveen and in 2019 appointed him captain at PSV.

Maurice Steijn is impressed by the transfer of the defender. Steijn lets it be known in the program Het Oranje Café on SBS6.

In particular, the career of the right-back can count on a lot of praise from the former coach. ''We should be proud of that as the Netherlands. Fantastic. And also such a beautiful, excellently built career, via Sparta, Heerenveen, PSV. He is also simply a good player. I think he can still play at the very top for another four or five years,'' Steijn believes.

According to the coach, Dumfries is an inspiration for many young footballers. ''But when you see the intrinsic motivation he has, that is an example for all the young boys. So I was glad that he walked with those young guys in the locker room,'' says Steijn.

Besides, Steijn thinks that the defender fits in perfectly with Real Madrid. ''That fits perfectly there. Dumfries is really someone who fits Mourinho's picture, in terms of character. Super great for him", Steijn says, who sees a real leader in Dumfries. "I think he will take on that role with the Netherlands team as well. He is a born leader. You could see that he immediately took on a mentor role at Sparta. There were a few young talents and that was great'', the former Sparta coach said.

If Steijn says Mourinho-type character, that sounds about right. Dumfries always looked like a guy who makes the hard runs and then actually defends too, not only the highlight reels. For PSV fans it's mixed emotions, but pure respect for the progression.
