Marcel Brands is “alarmed” after hearing about a “new budget”: “With a new stadium, we could make a serious blow in terms of revenue”
1 min readFor Marcel Brands as well, it is enormously exciting to consider the upcoming expansion of the Philips Stadium. Although the decision has not yet been fully made, we can actually gradually assume that the expansion is coming. At management level, they already regularly discuss large-scale renovations.
The consequences of the planned expansion of the Philips Stadium will be significant. With between 52,000 and 58,000 spectators from 2030, PSV can make major strides financially. General manager Marcel Brands talks about this in magazine Sporting Voetbal. In particular, from a budgeting standpoint, PSV will make significant advances.
Brands speaks of 'the biggest project that PSV has ever embraced'. "Recently we had a brainstorming day and I was asked by our commercial director Frans Janssen whether I found it scary. It isn't, but it is very exciting. However, it has to happen, because doing nothing is not an option."
"But you are talking about an investment of between 350 and 400 million euros. That is serious money and it must be handled with great care. The greatest responsibility we as management bear."

With the expansion, PSV can and will significantly increase its budget. "Our president-commissioner Robert van der Wallen is an entrepreneur to the core. He now jokingly says that we should be aiming for half a billion. So 500 million euros. I’ll stick with 200 million euros. Last year, with just one extra Champions League round, we had over 170 million euros; now we’re going for the first time over 100 million in revenue without football."
"With the new stadium, we are going to make a serious push in terms of revenue. Then I may have those 200 million euros in my head, but I am still triggered by that offhand remark about half a billion. I actually find that quite nice", according to Marcel Brands.

I like the PSV approach, but the article glossed over the fullback spaces. If the wide players dont stay compact in transition, it doesnt matter how good the build-up is. 👀
Goal!! The way they switched the play quickly at the end was pure PSV. If we keep doing that and not lose shape, we can go on a run 🚀
That defensive positioning in the article is worrying. When the fullbacks jump, the space behind them is a gift, even against midtable teams. Please coach, fix the trigger timing 💀
I hear the argument about giving youngsters minutes, but the balance has to be right. PSV looked most dangerous when the 8 arrived late in the box, that should be the plan more consistently, not just phases.
Honestly, the lineup choice is questionable. If the fullbacks dont push with confidence, then the wings end up isolated and our best chances become crosses from nothing.
No way this backline can keep playing like that if the article is right about the long balls. our centre backs need to be braver on the second ball, otherwise we end up defending instead of building. 🤦♂️
🔥🔥🔥
Frenkie-style composure this season would be nice, but i still think the pressing triggers are off. When we jump early, the second ball always goes to the wrong man.
If PSV really want more control in the build-up, they need that midfield to drop smarter. Right now it looks like we get stretched too easily between the lines.
BIGTOM or someone else said PSV are "ready to press from minute 1" and ngl i love that. 🔥 But if they press with the same triggers every time, teams will play around it fast.
i liked the mention of the pressing triggers. when we jump on the first pass, we win the ball high and it turns into chances immediately. thats the PSV i want, wether we're playing home or away. 🔥
"PSV Inside" should be happy, but i still think our right side is too easy to target. if Sangare isnt protecting that channel, Simons will get asked to cover way more than he should. 👀
tbh that midfield setup looks a bit too safe, we need more risk in the half-spaces or opponents will step out and squeeze us. if the article said we're going for control, i get it but Ajax-nerds will punish that instantly.
If PSV really go with that intensity up the pitch, Schouten and Tillman have to keep it clean because one loose touch and youre exposed. Im not saying it wont work, but the midfield has to protect the counter threat.
"We have to be brave" sounds nice, but bravery without better spacing is just chaos. Veerman needs to receive between the lines more often, otherwise our build-up stalls and opponents set up too easily 👀
If PSV are serious about control, we need that midfield to press higher. Right now it feels like we win the ball and immediately give it back. Still, the intensity in the box was real 🔥
