"I am not Peter Bosz's successor"
1 min readMarcel Brands is considered a big fan of him. The managing director sees something in him as a future head coach of PSV. Whether it will actually come to that remains to be seen, but the fact is that Stijn Schaars is doing well with PSV's management.
Vanishingly little is left to chance in his first year as head coach at the second-highest level; he already shows it right away. Where Jong PSV finished in the eighteenth place last season, it now even stayed in the upper tier. Schaars looks back on his performance with great satisfaction:
"Very positive; we had a good dynamic and were very competitive. We were able to introduce many boys to the KKD and many players have taken the next step through recruitment. With Noah Fernandez, a boy was even brought in at the first team, while several others are circling as well. That’s basically what we want.”
Which players then run into trouble? “That is always difficult. In the short term, we have a number of midfielders who could be considered. There is certainly potential there. I also think we have a central defender who could be that. And we have young strikers who can already move fast,” says Schaars, without naming names.

Jordy Bawuah (19) and Jim Koller (19) recently already made their debut in PSV’s first team. Souleymane Sidibe (19) made the most minutes this year in the midfield for Jong PSV. Just like Fernandez, Joël van den Berg and Fabien Meriën have already been part of the first team over the past few months. Everything looks very rosy when it comes to the progression of talent to the first team.
“More new boys are coming in again. PSV is full of talent; it’s up to us to get them onto the right stage as quickly as possible and prepare them for PSV 1, but who can latch onto that quickly is so hard to say,” Schaars continues.
Recently, Schaars was confronted at ESPN with the question of the succession of Peter Bosz. Schaars, according to his own account, is not concerned about it: “I said: I am not the successor of Peter Bosz. In the sense that I am not aiming for that yet. I am working on developing myself as a coach, but it should be clear that I find PSV a very beautiful club. The question is whether I want to get started there immediately as head coach, or whether I want to make other steps first. The future will tell,” said Stijn Schaars.

lol i swear we start shaky every match then suddenly wake up. If we score early vs them, game over, if not it turns into panic football real quick. 💀
That quote about trusting the young guys is fair, but i need defensive structure first. One careless turnover in transition and suddenly it is 0-1, no matter how good the possession looks. 💀
Eens. Even when it looks controlled, Berghuis keeps finding those half-spaces and the build-up finally has an end product. Id like to see more rotations though, because last time it got predictable after 60 minutes. 🚀⚽
Idk if im buying the hype around the lineup. The article mentions rotations, but the chemistry in the front line looked a bit off. Need that connection between the 10 and the winger to be faster next match. 😅
"PSV have to be braver in buildup" sounds nice, but last few matches showed we get punished for slow passes. If the fullbacks dont step early, the midfield space will be dead. 🤬
"PSV Inside" said the key is tempo, and yeah, but tempo without control is how you lose clean sheets. If the 6 doesnt screen the center, defenders have to bail out too much. 👀
"tempo en intensiteit" yes but also clean ball progression. When we turn it over in midfield, the counter is instant, no excuses. Get it right and this PSV XI is dangerous, goated stuff 💯
"PSV Inside" is spot on about the pressing trigger, it looked more coordinated this time. But defensively we need the line to hold, otherwise teams just play around us. 🔥
I like the idea, but im not convinced by the fullback overcommitment. If the wingers dont track back, those half-spaces get punished. Would rather see a more stable 6 and let the 8s attack in waves 🔥
Goal!! Just feed the right side and make them defend with their backs. Every time PSV stretches the line, the build up looks way more dangerous. 🚀
I think the article is spot on about PSV needing more width in the second phase. When the fullbacks stay high, that space in behind turns into real chances for Gakpo and the wingers. Im not fully convinced the midfield cover was there, though.
Why was X keeping drifting inside when the wing was clearly free? That moment killed our width, then the fullback had to cover twice. 👀 hope PSV address that in training.
Wie keek mee eigenlijk? Van die quote over "tempo en intensiteit" klinkt nice, maar ik zie het niet altijd terug in de 70e minuut. Zolang we niet slimmer doorschuiven, blijft het tegen compacte ploegen lastig 😅
If PSV stick with that midfield shape, Til should get more touches between the lines. Right now teams press us high and we lose the second ball too often. Still, gg if we can control the tempo early 👀⚽
Tbh i love seeing PSV play direct, but the pressing trigger has to be sharper than that. If they give the ball to the pivot too easily, youre cooked in transition. 🔥⚽
tbh i liked the way we built out of the back, but it still felt like we lost second balls too easily in midfield. 🙄 if that fixes itself, we can actually control games instead of just surviving them.
If PSV actually play that first-press triggers, Gakpo and Veerman will cook. But i worry the center backs will get dragged wide too easily, then it turns into panic mode quickly. 👀🔥
