Ajax coach Michel: “No problem, we can compete with PSV for the title.”
1 min read'Why not', sounds the reply when the new Ajax coach is asked whether his team can compete for the national title. Football changes every season, says Michel, and so he does see Ajax making a bid for the national title.
It would also be fitting to call it remarkable if Michel were not able to speak out in order to go and fight for the title, but on the other hand his optimism is certainly noticeable. In conversation with ESPN, Michel is also simply clear. 'No problem, we can fight for the title with PSV'.
Jordi Cruijff also does not hide his ambitions. Cruijff wants to become champion with Ajax as quickly as possible and thus in the summer of 20227. "Is that realistic? Yes. Why not? At Girona I experienced that in one year we played in the Champions League and the next year we were relegated. Every season is different."
Míchel places a lot of value on the things you do every day to get better. "You have to prepare well, work well, and focus on every day. Develop good habits, create clear patterns of play, and establish a top-sport culture", says the Spaniard. "If we are able to form a strong collective, then we can fight for the title. We’ll see."

Als Michel echt een topsportcultuur wil, dan moeten we het zien op het veld, niet in quotes. "Een hecht collectief vormen" is mooi, maar PSV gaat daar meteen aan knagen. Het wordt een lekkere titelkijker, maar ik verwacht dat PSV het tempo bepaalt. ⚽🚀
I kinda respect the daily-focus message, "good habits, clear play patterns", thats what good teams do. But Ajax fans always think itll click instantly. One bad run and suddenly it becomes excuses again. 👀
Jordi Cruijff saying "in zomer ... 20227 kampioen" is peak Ajax optimism lol. Still, fair point about every season being different. PSV just needs to keep winning and make Ajax chase games.

Dat dagelijkse werken en duidelijke spelpatronen klinkt goed, maar wij weten hoe lastig het is om dat meteen te laten lopen. Als Ajax te veel op theorie speelt en minder op ritme, dan trekken wij aan het einde van de wedstrijd. Gewoon drukzetten en straffen zodra ze uit voetballen.
Michel zegt "voetbal verandert ieder seizoen", oké, maar PSV is wel ook gewoon doorontwikkeld. Cruijff wil meteen kampioen zijn, dat is ambitie ja, maar het kan ook druk geven. Ik hoop vooral dat ze achterin dezelfde slordigheden houden, dan winnen wij de directe confrontaties.

"We kunnen met PSV strijden om de titel" klinkt lekker stoer, maar tbh Ajax praat al weken hard en PSV moet gewoon blijven pakken wat nodig is. Als Ajax dat collectief echt heeft, dan krijgen we lekkere duels. Anders wordt het weer een verhaal zonder punten.
