Frustrations in Alkmaar ahead of the Johan Cruyff Shield against PSV: 'That just can't be'
1 min readOn Sunday, August 2, the match PSV - AZ is scheduled as part of the contest for the Johan Cruijff Shield. As is customary, this is the opening match of the new football season in the Netherlands.
This season, PSV as champions will face AZ, who managed to take the KNVB Cup last year. Just like PSV, the Alkmaar team are also working towards this match.
Last weekend, Leeroy Echteld's team played a friendly match against SV Zulte Waregem from Belgium. The cup winner from last season could not get beyond 1-1, to Echteld's great frustration.
The coach of Alkmaar Zaanstreek was in particular not pleased about the attitude of some youth players and, moreover, some substitute players made a better impression after halftime. ''And that is therefore not possible. We cannot afford that,'' the coach says to the Noordhollands Dagblad.
Then Echteleid goes deeper into the match. ''I can't say that we were very bad, because we did dominate large parts of the game. But if you just don't give everything, then you end up with careless mistakes and you bring your own team down. Then you have to start fighting while that shouldn't really be necessary. That's just not what you want'', the coach continues.
Wesley Patati did not make a happy impression on the coach, but that does not mean that confidence is immediately lost. "Yes, I'm not going to play with him throughout the preparation and then throw him out a week before the start," said Echteld.

Die 1-1 tegen Zulte Waregem is natuurlijk vriendschappelijk, maar de tone of voice is hard. Als AZ inderdaad reserves beter vond na rust, dan is het voor PSV zaak om niet vroeg te slordig te worden, want dan krijg je van die wissel-stoot. 🙄
Echteld zegt dat ze gedomineerd hebben, maar "slordigheidjes" en dan knokken terwijl het niet hoeft. Dat klinkt precies als een wedstrijd waarin PSV toeslaat op momenten. Als Patati niet de indruk maakt die nodig is, dan moet PSV daar echt van profiteren, geen geduldspel.
"Ik ga niet de hele voorbereiding met hem spelen" ... begrijpelijk van de coach, maar ik verwacht dat Patati wel onder vuur komt. We moeten gewoon 1-0 maken en dan door, geen gedoe. 👀
1-1 tegen Zulte Waregem en dan meteen instelling als probleem... dat is wel zorgwekkend voor AZ, maar ook logisch na een seizoenstart. Als ze na rust beter worden, verwacht ik toch een lastige partij voor PSV, want Johan Cruijff Schaal is altijd kort en scherp.
Echteld zegt dat ze domineerden, maar slordigheden maakten en zichzelf naar beneden haalden. Voor PSV is dat juist het moment om AZ te laten twijfelen, vooral als PSV snel in transitie kan spelen. 🔥⚽
Wesley Patati gets singled out by Echteld, maar i ben benieuwd of PSV dan ook echt gaat doorpakken tegen dat soort schroom. Als we de druk niet kunnen zetten, gaat het alsnog lastig worden.
"Dat kan dus niet" ... tbh dat is precies wat i hoop dat PSV nooit doet in zo n wedstrijd. Als AZ hun instelling niet goed heeft, pakken wij ze, maar dan moeten we wel zelf scherp zijn.
