Former international points to Cody Gakpo
1 min readFormer PSV player Cody Gakpo is currently active with the Netherlands national team at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Last weekend, Gakpo was still good for two goals in the win over Sweden (5-1).
If it were up to analyst and also record international Wesley Sneijder, the current Liverpool FC forward lines up as the big man in the squad of national coach Ronald Koeman. Sneijder tells this in the radio program Barend and Benner on Radio 3FM.
The former central midfielder was himself active for Oranje at three different World Cups (2006, 2010 and 2014), in which the record international managed to find the net six times. During the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Sneijder was the one who carried things forward for the Netherlands when the formation of national coach Bert van Marwijk managed to reach the final.
This World Cup should have the role reserved for Gakpo, according to Sneijder. ''I wouldn't be able to name it right away, but maybe Gakpo. I think he has also been decisive for the Netherlands in recent years during major matches. If we then have to name just one, then I'll name Gakpo'', said the record international.
In 2022, Gakpo scored three goals in five World Cup matches when the Netherlands' side led by Louis van Gaal was eliminated in the quarterfinal after penalties by the eventual world champions, Argentina. Now the tally is already at two strikes for the winger.

Sneijder met die vergelijking aan WK 2010, snap ik. Maar jongens, wees eerlijk, Oranje loopt ook gevaar als het systeem alleen op Gakpo leunt. 2 goals is peak, maar ik wil ook zien dat hij mensen laat aanhaken.

idk, vind dat ze Gakpo soms te veel als eindstation zien. Ja hij scoort, maar Oranje mist soms de aansluiting vanuit het middenveld. Zolang Sneijder gelijk krijgt, is het vooral omdat Gakpo de ruimtes vindt.
Ik snap de hype, maar "grote man" vind ik nog wel vroeg. Gakpo is belangrijk, maar Oranje heeft ook momenten nodig van andere schakels, anders blijft het te afhankelijk. Tbh wel banger dat hij nu al op 2 goals staat. 🔥
5-1 tegen Zweden en dan twee goals van Gakpo, dat is echt lekker. Sneijder noemt hem "grote man" en eerlijk is eerlijk, hij lijkt telkens de wedstrijd te kantelen voor Oranje. 🥇⚽
Gakpo als "grote man" is eerlijk wel logisch. Die goals tegen Zweden, 5-1 en hij gewoon weer afgemaakt. Koeman heeft hem als constante dreiging nodig.
