Former Ajax player looks back on a squandered league title with PSV
1 min readOn 14 May 2025, in matchday 33 of the 2024/2025 season, PSV regained top spot from Ajax after Peter Bosz’s team had no trouble with Heracles Almelo (4-1) and the Amsterdam side, in the end, threw away valuable points at FC Groningen (2-2). Ultimately, PSV managed to extend their league title in matchday 34 with a 1-3 victory over Sparta Rotterdam.
For Wout Weghorst, now a striker for FC Twente, missing out on the league title still remains an open wound. Weghorst tells De Telegraaf in an interview.
''I still find it hard to talk about it'', begins the attacker to the national newspaper.
In doing so, Weghorst is still holding it against Francesco Farioli for never having said he wanted to go all out for the league title. ''Those were also my last words at his farewell: the will to win must always be greater than the fear of losing,'' the striker tells.
Despite a win against PSV (0-2) on 30 March 2025 that brought Ajax nine points behind Peter Bosz’s side with still seven matches to go, the title still went to Eindhoven. ''Of course everyone wanted to become champions. But I really believe in mindset. If you are truly convinced that you’re going to be champions, then you radiate it and also speak it out. Looking back, I think the fear of losing the title was greater than the conviction of becoming champions,'' Weghorst concludes.

ngl die quote over mindset raakt niet echt. Als je echt overtuigd bent, dan win je ook die laatste meters, zeker tegen Groningen, en niet alleen "stralen" in interviews. PSV pakte de kop en trok door, Sparta was daarna gewoon 1-3 en klaar. 👀⚽
0-2 bij PSV op 30 maart en toch geen titel, dat is echt zuur. Smh, en dan praat je over Farioli terwijl PSV gewoon doorduwde op de momenten dat het moest. 💀⚽
"Ik kan er nog steeds moeilijk over praten"... begrijpelijk hoor. Maar imo ze hadden gewoon niet uit moeten lopen op een tweede seizoen met te wisselvallige focus, zeker met nog 7 wedstrijden.
"de wil om te winnen moet altijd groter zijn dan de angst om te verliezen" is wel een statement, maar Ajax had toch kansen zat? 0-2 tegen PSV op 30 maart was perfect bewijs dat ze konden. Tbh snap ik niet waarom het zo lang op het PSV-toeval blijft hangen, Groningen 2-2 was uiteindelijk de echte aderlating. 🤡
Ja maar die quote over angst vs overtuiging is precies het spelbeeld. PSV straalde rust uit, Ajax werd nerveus, en dan krijg je dat in de resultaten terug. 👀
Farioli nooit echt "vol voor de titel" gaan, dat zegt Weghorst dus. Maar PSV was ook gewoon volwassen, 4-1 tegen Heracles en daarna Sparta pakken. ❤️🔥
Weghorst blijft het pijn doen, begrijpelijk. Maar die "mindset"-lezing voelt ook een beetje als achteraf muggenziften, want PSV deed gewoon z'n werk tegen Heracles en pakte daarna door bij Sparta. Groningan-uitje was vooral Ajax dat punten liet liggen, niet PSV dat "magisch" de titel stal. 🔥
Tbh Weghorst heeft wel gelijk dat mindset bepalend is. Ajax verspeelde punten bij Groningen en dan helpt het "wil" verhaal niet meer.
