1 min readSince his arrival on a loan deal from Aston Villa to AS Roma, former PSV player Donyell Malen has been incredibly energized. The second half of the season saw Malen score fourteen goals in eighteen matches, enabling the Romans to qualify on Sunday evening for the UEFA Champions League.
Also in the away match against Hellas Verona (0-2), the former PSV man was of great importance. In the 56th minute, Malen did indeed miss a penalty, but after a quick reaction by Paulo Dybala, the striker was still able to slot the 0-1 to set the course toward the big-money tournament.
Afterward, coach Gian Piero Gasperini was lyrical about Malen at the press conference, and even the Italian press is impressed by the Oranje international. ''His movements always leave two or three players offside and create space for his teammates. He misses the penalty, but reacts clinically,'' writes the Italian branch of Eurosport and gives Malen's performance a 6.
The popular La Gazzetta dello Sport is also positive about the former PSV player. ''As a 'killer' in attack, he ensured a turning point in the match with a goal,'' says the pink sports paper.
By Sky Sports Italia, Malen is rated with a 6.5 and Il Messaggero with a 7. "He collides with Edmundsson for a while, and at the start of the second half his penalty is saved by Montipò. He doesn’t even have time to despair before Dybala puts him back in the game and scores the goal that guarantees a Champions League spot. Fourteen goals in the league, one in the cup," writes the latter publication.

Gasperini die lyrisch is en meerdere Italiaanse bronnen rond een 6-7 geven, dat is solide. Ik ben wel benieuwd hoe Roma hem gebruikt als hij niet kan rennen op diepte, want bij Verona was het wel heel doelgericht. 14 league goals is in elk geval geen toeval. 😅
Oké maar eerlijk, penalty missen is altijd zuur. Tegelijkertijd die 0-1 na Dybala meteen inpassen en daarna doorpakken naar CL, dat is volwassenheid. Rocket fuel. 🚀
"Zijn bewegingen zetten altijd twee of drie spelers buitenspel" klinkt overdreven, maar als het zo werkt dan is hij daar echt de juiste type 9. 6 voor de penalty missen en dan alsnog de shift winnen, dat zegt genoeg. 💯
6 is natuurlijk flauw, maar ok. Als je kijkt naar die 14 goals in 18 duels dan snap ik wel waarom de pers gaat hyperventileren. Goated transfer voor hun. 💯
Tbh die manier van duwen en lopen waardoor anderen twee of drie man vastzet is precies wat PSV vroeger ook zo nodig had. Benieuwd of Roma dit in fases ook tegen topploegen zo kan herhalen, want klinisch doet ie het wel. 🔥

Die 6 punten en toch zo belangrijk blijven... tbh 6 is te laag als je ziet hoeveel ruimte hij wegtrekt. Bewegungen die 2-3 man buitenspel zetten is gewoon wedstrijdniveau, bruh.
